900+ lorry drivers stuck in their cabs this side of the channel tonight. My heart goes out to them. Macron has to open the border to the freight, it is ridiculous to suggest that there is too much of a risk involved in letting these lorry driver continue their journeys.

Well I hate to disagree, but I heard it from a government insider ( Boris Johnson ) that there were only about 174 lorries queuing last night.

Why are you gloating over Macron keeping his fellow EU citizens trapped in Blighty? :D ........

Just askin? :-> .......

Gloating? How very dare you Dave.To suggest that I am gloating is a very low blow.

Nah Veronica that's not a low blow ;-) ........

That's me flagging up yet another overblown Loser gripe :D ........

Don’t follow your train of thought Dave. What is it that I have written that amounts to a “loser gripe” (whatever that is).

Seems to me you are attempting to make a Brexit gripe hill out of a EU decision ;-) .........

Am I wrong? >:-) .........

If you look back Malc gave Boris’s version of the numbers of marooned truck drivers. My link was to what Priti Patel confirmed was the most likely number (and counting). Hence, I said she was going “off script”. My comments have nothing to do with Brexit or being “a loser” in your eyes. The situation in Dover seems pretty desperate. I just feel for the truck drivers and the poor people of Dover.

Facts, Dave, facts! The decision is French, not EU. The EU has been trying to get Macron (president of France, not of the EU) - in the interests of all those EU truck drivers who are losing money and who just want to get home for Christmas - to withdraw his (not the EU's) prohibition on vehicles originating from our hugely successful, world beating, Covid free, Land of Hope and Glory, from entering France.

Good evening Veronica. How refreshing to see you back with your informed, clear, well reasoned views. Please excuse Dave, he's been having a bad time recently, and is getting a bit fractious! It's becoming quite embarrassing, really! :-D

I'm begining to think you Losers and the EU dont realise how transparent you are :D .........

When you say the EU need us more than we need them because we import so much from them you are missing several things.

Like France is a TRANSIT country, Britain is not (apart from a tiny amount going to Eire which is easily re routed)

Look how many of those lorries passing through Calais are French. They are nearly all from other countries just passing through France, clogging up their roads and adding to their pollution.

If France stops these transit lorries try and think how much it bothers them, and how much it bothers us.

Then you just might begin to realise who is in the strongest position.

And how empty your threat of no deal is.

Especially when BoJo is tyring to take back fishing rights they have had for hundreds of years, and Quotas they have bought from us in deals we have signed and agreed.

The PM and Grunt Shatts just said on the briefing that the number of trucks stuck in the queue at Dover has dramatically gone down from 500 to 170. Anyone know where they have gone because they aint left the country, Dover is closed and Manston is not open to trucks yet. Are there 330 lorries now wild camping on village greens and stuff?

Violet1956 - 2020-12-21 11:04 PM

A more current update to this situation is 3000 truckers spent Boxing Day stranded. Great to see the local community have stepped up to the plate and been dropping off food and drink and ten volunteers from an east London Muslim community made up over 1000 portions of chicken biryani plus chocolate bars to deliver to the drivers.

More trucks continue arriving as Calais is allowing trucks to go to UK, but not back, and being a tiny little island country heavily reliant on daily imports via thousands of trucks.....we can't say "don't come". But quite how much longer before truckers turn their backs on UK altogether is another matter. From reading comments by truckers and freight forwarders, many international drivers already are turning the work down.

The Independant has reported that as of 0900 this morning (Boxing Day, Saturday) the lorry park at Manston has been completely cleared. No information about the stack on the M20 but that has shrunk too I expect. A total of over 15,000 COVID-19 tests had been done (only 36 provisional positives, which are now being checked) so the Goverment seems to have coped well.

Which proves there were at least 15,000 trucks and not "175". It's all well and good Schapps saying Manston is now emptied and cleared....what he hasn't said is where he's sent them to. I assume to sit in a queue on the M20 so he's just shifting one problem to create another. What a stroke of genius. :-|

Overall, and especially considering the French border was closed without notice just before Christmas, I agree. It's been a bit rough round the edges, but unless there had been a dummy run for such an event, and given the number of truck movements to be handled, I think that was inevitable. I really feel for those caught up in it, though. Must have wrecked thousands of Christmases.

the French Government seems to have coped well.

Fixed that for you Stuart

since it was the French Government who sent the test kits and crew

The French sent 26 Pompiers, our Government deployed NHS staff and 800 troops.

The EU obviously care when their citizens are stuck abroad.

another lesson BoJo could learn from them

But now they have got the EU lorry drivers back -

will they deliver to Britain again?

and who will manage the testing if they do?

And Brussels instructed France not to close the boarder......that went well.

what he hasn't said is where he's sent them to.

Doubt if he's sent them anywhere

Probably doesn't know where they have gone if they have got so p*ssed of with the lack of facilities they have gone somewhere else?

As every trucker is past desperate now to get back home to their families, all will have headed to Dover port. Quite why government chose to move the trucks off Manston instead of creating a sensible trickle flow to Dover I don't know, but showing an empty truck park makes better pr.

Is that another of your personal opinions or was it actually reported? Because I can't find anything to suggest what you imply. What I have read is the EU criticised France for imposing COVID-19 tests on truck drivers returning from Britain, with an estimated 10,000 waiting in Kent to cross the English Channel.

"I deplore that France went against our recommendations and brought us back to the situation we were in March when the supply chains were interrupted," tweeted EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean on Wednesday.
