I see from above quotes that google mentions prices up to a £1000.00

And a replacement one one for £340.

A new one from Fiat is £175.00 plus vat plus one hour to fit including the software update.

It will then come with 12 months warranty covered by Fiat

Depending on age of van and circumstances, not everyone is able to avail themselves of warranties or dealer goodwill.

£175 plus labour plus software/diagnostics plus VAT at a main dealer will set you back about £450 without any goodwill or warranty.

If the original unit has suffered software corruption and can be reflashed, which appears to be the most common failure mode, the cost is generally less than the labour you have admitted having to pay for your goodwill replacement.

If not, each individual owner has to decide what is best for their circumstances. £340 for a cloned unit that an owner can refit with no need for programming if they don't have access to compatible diagnostic equipment, may in many situations be cheaper than the overall costs at a Fiat dealer. Whilst it may not cost the companies who can reflash the units anywhere near that amount to restore an individual ECU once they have the equipment to do so, the specialised equipment has to be invested in, and no doubt their prices are led by supply and demand, and are carefully considered on the basis that they will in many circumstances show a cost saving over a main dealer repair, both for a vehicle owner and an independent workshop.

So as with many things in life, you have to work out what is best for you in your circumstances.

I see by Steve’s original post that his MH is the same age as mine and he should with no problem receive the same benefit as me and this will only have to pay for labour and diagnostics.

I’m not one to use main dealers for any of my service work, except when it comes to specialist work.

I’ll know on Monday when the new ECU is fitted how much they charge in total. .

Quick update.

Booked my MH in on Wednesday for them to look into the airbag fault.

New ecu ordered and delivered to them Friday afternoon

Booked ours in for this morning 10.30 am

Received a call just over 11.30 to advised job done.

Cost £117.00 including Vat.

Fiat supplied the ecu foc.

I asked the service guy how many years they would go back.

His answer was.

Fiat know it’s a problem and if customers ask for Fiat assistance they will in most cases be excepted.

For once I’m pleased with main dealer service.
