The one time you don't want him telling the truth.

Time we paid back the £400 million we've owed Iran since 1979.

Apparently so from more recent news reports;

Fri 4 Sep 2020 16.13 BST

The defence secretary, Ben Wallace, has for the first time acknowledged that he is actively seeking to pay a debt to the Iranian government........Wallace assured lawyers acting for the families that the government was exploring every legal avenue to pay the debt, which for the first time he formally acknowledged the government owes.

They know a key date is looming in the decades-long wrangle over hundreds of millions of pounds in debt owed by the UK for tanks ordered before the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979. In early April a court hearing could see the last hurdles to the repayment of that debt cleared.

Saturday 6th 2021

He describes his wife as a hostage - used as a bargaining chip over a long-standing debt that Britain owes Iran for a tank deal that was never fulfilled. "The Revolutionary Guard have been completely consistent over the past five years - that they arrested Nazanin as leverage for the tank debt," says Mr Ratcliffe.

"They've held her all the time that it's not being paid. And I think that if the tank debt is not paid, not only will Nazanin and other dual nationals continue to be held but more collateral will be taken."

It seems the UK government hands are tied by a court ruling which went against payment to Iran. Legally they can’t pay it.

I assume that depends whose law it is.

If it's U.K. law, surely the government can change it ?

It's interest which the court ruled against paying. The £400 million Iran paid for an order of Chieftain tanks UK then sold to Saddam Hussein, that debt to Iran has never been in dispute. Previously UK used the excuse they couldn't pay it because the EU imposed sanctions [against Iran]. We can't use that excuse now. Time to pay up.
