Truma gas/electric isolator switch

Sandalwood owns a 2012 IH TIO 630 RL panel-van conversion with an under-chassis LPG tank.

Truma markets an electrically-operated gas shut-off solenoid valve (Part Number: 57013-01) that’s advertised here

https://www.autogasshop.co.uk/truma-remote-gas-solenoid-and-switch-gs8-8mm-fitting-238-p.asp

It’s worth highlighting that the valve would be installed in the low-pressure side of Sandalwood’s motorhome’s gas system ‘downstream’ of the LPG tank’s regulator. This means that - although the Truma valve would isolate the part of the gas system that is inside the motorhome from the part of the system that is outside the motorhome - it would not turn off the gas supply at the LPG tank’s outlet. Also worth noting that, when in operation (ie. when the gas is shut off) , the solenoid valve draws a small electrical current. This would need to be borne in mind if the motorhome is to be static/stored for a long period to avoid the leisure battery from being flattened. (Incorrect - see subsequent comment from Keithl.)

Remotely turning off a LPG tank’s gas supply easily at the tank itself has been discussed here in the past (usually relating to EuroTunnel regulations)

and references were made to the Truma solenoid valve.

GAS-IT markets a "LPG Tank Remote Operated HI Flow Solenoid Valve” (advert here)

https://www.gasit.co.uk/lpg-tank-remote-operated-solonoid-valve.html

This valve is installed in place of a LPG tank’s manual outlet tap and shuts off the gas ‘at source’. However, there are potential downsides as explained in the advert.

(It may be worth asking why Sandalwood feels a need to turn off the “almost unreachable gas tap” sufficiently often to make remote LPG shutting off worth having.)

Derek,

My understanding of these electrical isolation valves is the opposite! ie you have to apply power to open the valve. or in other words they 'Fail safe'.

Think how dangerous the opposite would be? The battery voltage falls and the valve opens...

So the 40 mA draw would be present the whole time the gas was turned ON.

I tried to find Truma instructions for this product, but failed to do so...

I’m sure you are right, though (in my opinion) some of the adverts don’t make this 100% clear

(It seems to be a reasonably common thing to fit to boats.)

There are alternatives that might be considered (examples here)

but I don’t know how suitable they might be for a motorhome regarding fitting a 12V power consumption. (These operate as you’ve said - the valve is normally closed and is held open electrically.)

Cause we ain’t supposed to drive with gas on ?

This 2017 MHFun forum thread was headed “Driving a motorhome with the gas on!”

https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/driving-a-motorhome-with-the-gas-on.152932/

Historically, when there were no gas equipment and pan-European regulations that permitted a gas heater to be operated safely/legally while a vehicle was in motion. and leisure-vehicle ‘smart’ fridges that select their own power-source had yet to be invented, and the vast majority of leisure-vehicle owmers carried LPG in bottles in an easily accessible gas-locker, it was a simple matter to turn off the gas ‘at source’ by closing the gas-bottle outlet valves prior to the motorhome/caravan being driven/towed.

Nowadays if a motorhome has the appropriate gas heater or a ’smart’ fridge, habitually turning the gas OFF will inhibit the potential of such appliances, but the real bugbear comes when the motorhome has a fixed underslung LPG tank with its outlet valve protected by a cover and the valve’s operation requiring the motorhome owner to scrabble underneath the vehicle.

I would be interesting to know how many (if any) owners of a motorhome with a LPG tank religiously turn off that tank’s outlet before driving their vehicle. Also, how many of those owners go to the trouble of fitting a device to allow the tank’s gas-supply to be isolated without having to turn off the tank’s outlet valve.

(Incidentally, there are comments on boating forums about the Truma solenoid valve’s long-term reliability. It’s pointed out that - if the valve fails - it will probably fail ‘closed’ leaving the gas-supply shut off.)

Guidance is on this forum thread

https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/-IDENTIFYING-YOUR-MOTORHOME-/54713/

(The thread is ‘stuck’ at the very top of the Motorhome Matters forum homepage. It’s often overlooked (or ignored) and I’ve been tempted to copy it half a dozen times and stick all the copies at the top of this forum’s homepage. So far I’ve resisted using that approach...)
