Ducato 540 Campervan/Motorhome

Hi - I am interested in buying one of these (I would dearly like to rent one first??) I like the campervan style (narrower) and the 540 length for greater manoeuvrability - can anyone recommend a brand to me (fixed rear bed is my preference)? Thanks in advance.

Globecar make a 5.4m fixed bed, but be aware at this length the bed becomes a lot narrower and the table in the dinette is also smaller than 6m models, their shower tray in the corridor is possibly the only practical way to have this layout.

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Alizapp.

Most of the manufacturers of Ducato-based panel-van-conversion models have used the short-wheelbase variant, but I’m not sure how many of these will have found their way into the UK.

Colin has mentioned Globecar.

Hymer offers the "Camper Van Free 540”

https://www.motorhomes.co.uk/manufacturers/hymer/camper-van/camper-van-free-540/

Knaus the “Boxstar 540”

https://www.knaus.com/en-uk/camper-vans-cuv/boxstar-540/highlights/

Pilote the "VAN COMPACT V540G”

and Chausson the “V594S”

A fixed rear bed takes up a lot of space in such a short vehicle and an alternative (discussed here in the past, but no longer marketed) was Adria’s “Twin 500S” that used a different approach (photos on this old advert)

(I’d expect the price (and the quality of the conversion) to be highest for the Hymer and Knaus models, and lowest for the Chausson.)

I am an unashamed fan of the East Neuk Fifer M. MMM published an article in 2019 about it. It does NOT have a fixed bed but for a 5.4m van a fixed bed takes up a lot of space some some form of compromise may be worthwhile.

East Neuk can build on a Ducato chassis albeit at a higher cost but if you want an automatic it is not at present available as a Citroen.

Dreamer "Fun D42"model details here

I think the current Rapido range of PVCs does not include a Ducato short-wheelbase variant, but there used to be a"V43" model that had a transverse rear bed.

We have a Weinsberg Carabus 541. It has a fixed bed and the shower/toilet is compact and not into the corridor space. Yes the table is very small but we are finding it fine for the two of us. Most of the time my husband eats in the drivers seat swivelled round rather than on the bench seat. But we are delighted with the size of the van. Great for parking in normal sized parking bays.
