BML
Each winter I forget to do anything to ensure that my vehicle and leisure batteries remain charged. I attempted to have a solar panel fitted but both of the Oxfordshire based mobile caravan/motorhome mechanics looked at job, said they would return and were never seen again. Perhaps if someone in Oxfordshire is reading this they might be able to recommend someone. I suspect an alternative would be a smart charging device that can be activated by the camper Hook Up system and could maintain both batteries. Could someone please recommend such a device. StuartO
It would help to provide specific advice if you told us what model and year of motorhome you have. Mine is quite old (2006) but like all Hymers keeps both batteries charged safely simply by plugging in external mains power. I simply leave mine plugged in all year round for this reason. The built-in mains charger maintains a trickle charge at 13.8 volts once fully charged. For less well equipped motorhomes a variety of ways of achieving the same sort of thing. If you have no access to mains power there are other approaches such as solar panels.
buddy
Have a look at the Vanbitz battery master (very easy to fit) , it should do exactly what you are looking for when the van is connected to hook up and also will work well with solar panels when fitted. Agreed, plus, if possible, whose electrics and what types of batteries are installed, as some makes/models of charger are kinder to batteries than others, and some batteries types have differing charging requirements to others. Derek Uzzell
StuartO - 2022-01-06 3:09 PM It would help to provide specific advice if you told us what model and year of motorhome you have... Yes it would :-( https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/-IDENTIFYING-YOUR-MOTORHOME-/54713/ I think from Brian's previous enquiries that his motorhome is an Auto-Sleepers "Pollensa" model (2002?) on a Peugeot Boxer base and - provided that the vehicle's starter and leisure batteries are fairly near each other - it should be straightforward to install the Vanbitz "Battery Master" buddy has mentioned. https://www.vanbitz.com/the-van-bitz-battery-master/ Alternatives might be the Votronic 3065 (example advert here) https://simplysplitcharge.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1278 or CBE's CSB2 product (ebay advert here) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121946837453?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28 The alternative devices only function when the leisure-battery is receiving charge, whereas the Vanbitz "Battery Master" is able to pass charge from the leisure-battery to the starter-battery even when the leisure-battery is not receiving charge.
