Help please - small gas cylinder connection

Hello,

I have a VWT5 with a small gas locker. The gas system has a fixed 30Mbar regulator. Currently There is a Camping Gaz 907 cylinder connected by a tap on the cylinder via a hose with different screw fixings on either end to the regulator. Photos of all these bits at http://homepages.which.net/~patrick.martin/

I'd like to also be able to use a 3.9Kg propane cylinder - preferably a Flogas (as these are cheaper than Calor).

Please can anybody tell me what I need to buy (and where I can buy it) to attach a Flogas cylinder to my system?

Do Flogas and Calor have different types of connection on the cylinder?

The cylinder I want to use is here

http://www.flogas.co.uk/buy-online/cylinders/39kg-propane-gas-cylinder-refill/

I saw the local Flogas dealer (a builders' merchant) but he doesen't have anything suitable to make the connection.

Flogal and Calor use the same fittings - though they're different for Butane and Propane. I would suggest using Propane as you'll have no problems with it going solid in winter.

You need to find good accessories shop that sells gas connections - or a good Calor dealer to get the right bits.

When you fit them, do do a test to make sure all the new connections are gas tight. The simplest and best way is to make up a mix of one part washing-up liquid to about 3 parts water in a small bowl and spread it onto the connections with your fingers. Any leak will cause bubbles to apear.

Hi Patrick,

To use a Calor or Flogas propane cylinder with your 30mb bulkhead fitted regulator, you need a high pressure connecting hose of suitable length from those listed under 'UK Propane' on this page http://www.gaslow.co.uk/pages/c_s2_4.htm

Alternatively, you could use an adapter with your existing hose. Truma used to market one with part number 50020-34500 and in 2002 (when I bought mine), these were about £12.50. This adapter effectively enables you to use the standard high pressure butane fitting hose with a UK propane bottle.

In all honesty, the hose situation has moved on a bit since 2002 and steel braid hoses are now being marketed strongly. A butane fit braid hose and the aforementioned propane adaptor would enable you to use UK Propane and most European bottles plus Camping Gaz too.

Incidentally, make sure that your bulkhead regulator is sited above the top of the gas bottle exit to avoid any contamination reaching the regulator.

Edited to add the following - After writing this post, I took a look at the 2007 Gaslow catalogue and I see that they now do a Butane to propane fitting adapter that would serve your purpose equally as well as the Truma one. It is item no. 01-1674 in their catalogue priced at £10.95. It would screw onto your existing hose and enable you to connect to the Flogas bottle you wish to get.

Regards,

Nobby

Thanks to you guys for your help.

I would have liked to get the suggested Gaslow stainless steel connection http://www.gaslow.co.uk/pages/c_s2_4.htm but everybody I tried was out of stock of the short one, so I ended up with a conventional rubber (or whatever they are) connection.

As far as getting the Flogas 3.9Kg propane cylinder was concerned, this proved less easy than I expected. If you are going down this path you will almost certainly find that a) places listed as stocking this particular cylinder on the Flogas website, don't do so, b) some stockists are trade only and the Flogas website doesn't bother to tell you this, and, c) there are some very silly prices out there for the cylinder itself - as of May 2007 this should be around £18 inc VAT and will shortly be going up to around £21.

Incidentally 'my' cylinder is considerably taller (by about 40mm) than the spec says (which, to be fair, does say 'approx'). The link to that is http://www.flogas.co.uk/buy-online/cylinders/39kg-propane-gas-cylinder-refill/.
