Alans1949 Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Can anyone recommend a safe system for accessing the roof for cleaning. The main problem I have is that point when you have to lean over to reach the centre. Thanks. Alan.
John52 Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Long handled brush with hose connected to it Then you don't have to lean over to reach the centre similar to this; https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/rac-heavy-duty-water-fed-car-wash-brush-2m-379721 I don't know whether that particular one is any good or not though.
laimeduck Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 As well as the long handled brush you could also get a work platform like this https://tinyurl.com/3cdyx4uf I adapted mine with additional bracing struts so that I can have the platform at the top of the ladder rungs. So I can work on the motorhome roof safely and with ease.
Tracker Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Unless the handbook says that you can, best not to walk on the roof to avoid the risk of causing leaks or structural damage. I always managed with a high pair of steps, or a padded ladder, and a long handled car wash brush. Car shampoo may be inadequate to shift and discourage green algae and I used to use Flash liquid - other cleaners are available - but this was always frowned on by others who paid for 'special' cleaning liquids.
Barryd999 Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Its safe to walk or crawl perhaps on our Kontiki roof. Just not the very front overcab bit. Ive always done it until the last few years where I now send someone else up to clean it as my knees are shot. Never had any issues. Check your manual but mine says its safe to go up on it.
Tracker Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I may be wrong, but my perception is that construction methods have changed ostensibly to save weight - but mainly to save cost - and whilst many 'older' designed vans may be safe for roofwalkers it would certainly pay to find out first! I agree - It's no place for an old fart's kneesup Barry!
Alans1949 Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 Thank you all for your suggestions. Alan
Adiebt Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Padded ladder ( pipe lagging ) , extendable brush , buckets at base of ladder one with shampoo the other with cold water for getting grit of the brush . With extendable brush at max you can dunk into the buckets whilst at the top of the ladder then rinse off with a karcher set at sprinkle. I only do mine once a year ( usually after Europe trip in September .) and that suffices. p.s my knees aren’t shot !
Caddies104 Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 Scaffold tower, easy to assemble and very light.
malc d Posted December 29, 2022 Posted December 29, 2022 My problem is that my van is parked on a slope, so all ladder arrangements are a bit precarious. I can access quite a bit of the roof through the roof light, standing on smaller steps inside the van.
