Happy new year to all!

while out and about on my bike recently it came to mind about the new law passed last year forbidding wild camping in Portugal and you could only use recognised sites. Last year to some degree it was enforced, this year I am not so sure đŸ€” Two pictures near and in Pera near Albufeira show people abusing this and there are many more instances along the Algarve coast.

Can I wild camp in Portugal ?

  1. Yes, wild camping is once again allowed in Portugal, with exceptions. As per amendments to Portugal’s Highway Code articles 48 and 50-A approved in July 2021, “overnight stays in motorhomes approved by the IMT (Institute of Mobility and Transport) for a maximum period of 48 hours are allowed”. Wild camping is still banned on lands belonging to the Natura 2000 network, protected areas and areas covered by the Coastal Development Plans. Violations on these lands can result in a fine between 120 to 600 euros. Before you go camping in Portugal, it’s important to note that the approved amendments have been not been ratified into law just yet and await a formal process.

Hi Derek,

while they may have eased it a little (which makes for more confusion) the pictures are of waste land 100 meters from the beach and virtually on the beach and still they do it. I can only assume the GNR (police) are not bothering too much ?

Yes I do wild camp but only in places where it is legal to do so. Portugal changed its rules and next to the beach without any facilities whatsoever is illegal.
Maybe you’re one of the wild camping type that flouts the law and parks where ever they want, spoiling it for the more law abiding wild campers ? đŸ€”
