My habitation battery needs replacing. it is an 85amp, can anyone tell me if I could replace it with a 110 amp one?. my usage of my MH rarely sees me having electric hook up (No, I dont camp wild, but attend sporting events where there just isnt any). please help.

We replaced a 85amp habitation battery with a 110Amp gel battery on our last Hymer.

This was checked out for me by the service people at a Hymer dealer when we were in Germany.

The battery never gave us a problem and powered us OK, when not on hook up. Like you our "Draw" on power was quite low when not on site.

There will be better qualified people than I on this forum, who may give you more tech info.

We're quite lucky as we have a battery specialist shop only about 2 miles from where we live.

All I can suggest is you go to your local dealer and beg the question, BUT please do get an independent quote from another party before parting with you hard earned money.!!!!

I think you'll need to give a bit more information.  Make and model and year of motorhome, and make of base vehicle, for starters.  How old is the battery and what leads you to believe you need to change it?  How long has the present 85Ah battery been lasting you without hook up?  You'll also need to check that the slightly larger 110Ah battery will actually fit in lieu of the 85Ah you already have.

Hi Mary- I to found that a 85amp leisure battery did not last to long when used often without EHU. I changed mine to 110amp after checking it would fit the compartment, and have realy noticed the difference. A battery delivers 12volts the amperage is basicly its storage power. I cant see any reason why you cannot do a simple swap( bearing in mind the extra size). The reason manufacturers only supply a 85amp is purly cost cutting and trying to get more attrative payload figures. I would also reccomend you buy a wet cell battery type as they are far more suitable so say the battery manufacturers. Regards chas

thanks to all who have replied to my battery query. my MH is an autosleeper Inca 2005. when tested by a local motor mechanic, he found that one of the cells was almost dry and when it was trickle charged it just works the TV for about five mins only and then the voltage reading is 9.5 poor and TV switches off. As the battery is fitted under the drivers seat (I had a swivel seat fitted as an extra) there seems to be enough length but not so sure about height for 110 amp. I have always kept it plugged into the mains and the battery charger on for a day or so and then off for a day or so. I had a problem with the radio switching on by itself but have sorted this out, by removing the radio fuse when its parked up at home. regards Colleen

Seems a bit young to me to have boiled a cell.  Not still under warranty, is it?  Could be worth checking.  Or hasn't it ever been topped up - in which case I guess it's just one of those annoying lessons one learns as one goes along!

The radio switching on by itself is a new one to me, most people on here complain about them switching off!  Do you know how long before it comes on, and under what conditions?  I.e switch off engine, and radio on after N minutes, or switch on charger and radio on after N minutes.  Do you know if the radio is fed from the starter, or habitation batteries?  Do you know if the starter battery is charged while on hook-up, or is it just the habitation battery?

The best place to get any oddities sorted out, if you think there is something more than just a neglected battery that has failed, may well be the Autosleepers factory.  I have read several favourable reports from others who have gone back there with problems.  Apparently they will talk to, and sort things out for, their customers.  How obvious, but how nice.  I think you have to arrange it beforehand, though, it isn't a turn up and go system!

We have a radio which turns itself on. I found the problem though. It has a remote control and it appears to have similar frequencies to both our t.v. and a FTA sat box we use and it was the remotes for those which were turning the radio on - Now when not in use I remove the front of the radio.
