I understand that on the continent there is a dedicated phone number staffed by english speaking officers so that, for instance, I could check the credentials of a possibly dodgy police officer.

 

Is this information correct, and if so can anyoine provide the number

Geoff,

 

The only one I know of is in Spain and covers the more popular tourist areas the number is 902 - 10 21 12

That number is for making a 'denuncia' (reporting a crime). They take all the details over the phone, in English if you want, and then they fax the form to a local police station, where you need to go to sign the hard copy within 24 hours.

 

It's a nationwide number for wherever you are in Spain.

 

Whether they will help you with other matters I don't know.
