insurance!

Hello to everyone, can anyone help with information regarding travel insurance which covers older (in age not spirit) people and allows for longer periods of time away. I have had annual insurance before now but need a slightly different type as we are hoping to be able to go away for a longer time now that we are retired.

Hi Mary

With regards personnel insurance, then you could try SAGA, as they specifically deal with the over 50's(not wishing to sound rude), most M/H insurers will look at extended travel cover whilst abroad for your van.

I'm sure you'll get more detailed advice from other forum members.

Hope this helps a little with some ideas.

This question pops up fairly regularly, so it might be worth doing a search of the archives. Once you get over 70 it becomes difficult, even with organisations such as SAGA. I have found Nationwide quite helpful, but I have medical problems rather than age right now.

One source in the UK that specialises is Age Concern.

Hi Mamie

I have become very frustrated trying to source an annual travel policy that covers you for longer than 60 days. We plan to go to the States for approx 3-4 months and we can only find one that comes close to giving us cover for that period. It is called Round The World Insurance. They will still only give you a limited cover but are unique in that they will allow you to call from abroad to renew the policy when it is due to run out. I haven't yet entered into a contract with them because we don't go until August. I have just gleaned this info from their website.

Of course if you are in Europe you are covered for all your health needs etc. We tested this in Spain recently when my husband had a severe skin infection and it didn't cost us a penny for three lots of medication.

There is a definite need for companies to come up with the cover that more and more people are after though.

America is a different kettle of fish however.

Pat,

That statement is not quite correct, the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) will not cover you if you have to be flown home in an air ambulance for any reason after a cardiac arrest, a road traffic incident or such like. You are looking at £12000 for a med flight home.

Hi Mamie- Insurance companys dont like taking risks, they want your money but think they will need to pay out for more "mature citizens"so either refuse or pile on a high premium. If you have not already done so, and you intend staying in Europe, give one of the main clubs a ring, they normaly do every thing for long stays which includes insurance, both medical, mechanical and even supplement home insurance while you are away, something that can be overlooked. Good Luck. chas

For my travel Insurance, I prefer an annual policy with a 'sensible' duration per trip.....last year I obatined this from Insure and Go, and at a very reasonable price, limit of 90 days per trip and as many trips per year as I wanted. This year, depsite being only 1 year (well a few days actually) over their age limit, they didn't want to know. I shopped around both on the phone and internet, and found the worst offenders were the @older age' companies (ie Saga, Age concern, etc).

In the end, and only because I had taken out a home insurance policy with them and I was reading through the documentation, I called Halifax BS, and they came up with the goods.Ok, it's for 60 days per trip, but again as amnay as I wish per year, and the cost very little different from the previous one.

I understand that Bradford and Bingley also offer a good policy, but don't know what cost or restrictions.

personally, I thik Travel insurance should be more health related than age related, as some older folk are far healthier than some of the younger ones!
