Poppy
Michelin used to do a useful guide to these. Do they still do it and if so what is it called.
Brian Kirby
If you get/have a 1:200,000 Michelin road atlas of France, the aires de repos are indicated on the maps as green semi-circles alongside the autoroutes. Aires de services (filling stations) are the blue semi-circles. Note, however, that neither is intended, or recommended, as overnight stopping places. They are serviced picnic and short break stopping points only. There are a few autoroute aires designated as "aires de services camping-cars". However, the same is true for these. They are for dumping wastes and taking on water, not for overnight stopping. If you stop overnight on autoroute aires you are not, so far as I know, breaking any laws, but you are taking avoidable risks. For overnight stops in France, in security, leave the autoroute and seek out an "aire de services camping-cars" designated as an overnight stopping place; or use a campsite.
