Going to France gov website says I have to prove I have 120 euros daily for trip lasting 30 days! Bemused!  Also Brittany Ferries recommend 2 vets at Cherbourg for return trip, has anyone used these.  Haven’t been to France since lockdown, longing to go but a bit jittery as we taking dog.  Any advice or help would really be appreciated.  Our travel insurance quite ridiculous, can anyone recommend good  reliable insurance company for oldies!    We are going overnight ( gulp) Portsmouth to Cherbourg, wife is scared doing overnight!

Manythanks

I can't advise on the pet issue but we did Portsmouth Caen just recently, daytime one way and overnight the other. With both we took a cabin. It was a breeze. Turned up at the check-in (at least an hour in advance is essential), checked in then waited in the holding lanes until boarding, then through security and on to the boat. Excellent and smooth crossing and on the overnight leg everyone is woken up an hour before arriving so there’s even time to grab a cooked breakfast before disembarking.

Re the money issue, we carry a few euros from previous trips (maybe 20 euro) but pay for everything on our cards, like the UK everywhere is pretty much cashless these days. So 120 euro cash per day is nonesense.

Re insurance, we’re only in our late 60’s with no medical issues so use our Nationwide Plus account to cover everything.

I never thought that a plate of snails for lunch and one of frogs for dinner would cost 120 euros.

Perhaps it's the "mousse au chocolat a volonté" (the only appreciable thing about French cuisine) that increases it.

The 120 euros 'rule' is explained here

It's perhaps worth emphasising that there is a significant difference between "I have to prove" and "I may have to prove". The chances are minimal that UK motorhome owners entering France for a relatively short trip will be checked for 'solvency'.

(I'm guessing that Sandalwood may be choosing the Portsmouth-Cherbourg overnight crossing as the ships on that route have on-board facilities for dogs so that the animals need not stay in their owner's vehicle. If that's the reason and the trip has not been booked, it would be wise to confirm with Brittany Ferries about the availability of (say) pet-friendly cabins.)

Ref insurance ... I would second Nationwide. £13 per month for the current account. I have an age addition £60 for age (and less for days) and a over 30 days addition but it is still very reasonably priced. And both additions are for one full year.

It does not mean you have to have that sum in cash just that you have it available just take a bank statement. Never been asked to prove funds yet, may be different if using the long stay tourist vissa

No need to worry about anything in France .. I am in St Jean de Luz writing this. Other than prices (as in UK) nothing has changed. Just come over and enjoy.

Jeremy i was there many times.  Whit my MGB. And in nearby Biarritz. The youngsters from  the uk flew very cheap From uk to There. And  made parties there.  The Ham is cheaper in Spain.

Just returned after meeting friends who had been in Spain and having their 90 day allowance. They have a dog who they took to a vet in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe a few days before we returned, they have used them before. Apart from having a colder time than we usually have we had a fantastic 12 days crossing from Portsmouth to Ousterhem and going down to Bordaux area to meet up and then pottering back home via a couple of days in La Rochelle and generally having a really fab time. Certainly nothing to worry about going so you get on and have a good time too. Personally I cant wait for May as I have to go down to Bergerac to a family wedding, roll on! Oh and no one asked me anything about what money I had or even what was in my fridge just if I had anything packed by someone else or had anyone hidden in my van.

Sandalwood, if you're using the same route both ways, then on your outbound trip every town you pas through will have a vet. Stop at any one on the outbound and book the dog in for your return. In the unlikely event that you don't spot one, each town will have a tourist information office, often at the Mairie, and they'll find one for you and if you're worried about language they'll phone and book you in. Even easier, Google for English speaking vets in France and Robert is your mother's brother🤭

Dont worry about overnight crossings.  We used to regularly sail to & from Hull overnight - holiday began when we boarded the ship.  We havnt been abroad since before Covid, but would have no qualms about an overnight ferry.
