Grumpy Grandad Posted July 1, 2023 Share Posted July 1, 2023 Hi. Due to both of us having mobility issues, we now tow a Fiat 500 behind our motorhome, using an A-frame. The A-frame was supplied and fitted by a well known Tow bar and A-frame manufacturer. We have towed the car all over the country without any problems, until 4 weeks ago. The braking system works on the over run principal, similar to a caravan or trailer. We towed the car from the North East to Kendal with no problems at all. We then left for a trip down to Southport. After travelling for about 50 miles down the M6 we were flagged down by a very friendly passing HGV driver, and found that we had suffered a front nearside wheel blowout on the car. We were then recovered to National tyres at Preston where it was found that the other front tyre was also shot. Both front wheel brakes were completely locked on. The car was then transported to our home where I put on new wheel discs, new pads and, new callipers on both sides. It was then found that the outer cv joints on both wheels had been damaged, so it was then transported to our local garage. They then found that the abs cable had also been damaged. The car is now back on the road and drives perfectly ok, but, we are now very cautious about putting it back onto the motorhome. I hasten to add that I always check that the steering lock is disengaged, handbrake off, and out of gear. and that the bowden cable for the over run brake system has sufficient slack. I appreciate that we can all make mistakes, but has anyone any ideas please as to what could have gone so terribly wrong. Stuart Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Grumpy Grandad Posted July 2, 2023 Author Share Posted July 2, 2023 Hi Alan. Ours also came with a bungee cord to fasten on to the seat frame. No one can work out what went wrong, but, possibly the front brakes were slightly binding, and as they got hotter, and therefore tighter, the brakes ended up being virtually locked on solid. The rear wheels however were perfectly ok. One of the mysteries of life perhaps. With some trepidation we are taking the car with us again later this week.
