fair charges for electricity

With the current price of energy (no pun intended) there has been a lot of debate about whether camp sites can continue to provide EHU at a fair price for everybody. We recently stayed at Westacott camping site near Bideford and they had a system where you were provided with a smartcard to which credit could be added. This smart card was then inserted into a meter on the hook up point and the credit was transferred to the meter and was displayed in kwh. When the credit dropped to about 3kwh an alarm went off and you could take the card to reception to have more credit added. At the end of our stay you inserted the card into the meter and any remaining credit was transferred back to the card for a refund. Over the 5 days we used £17 of electricity, we are probably fairly light users. I thought it was a brilliant scheme and meant that the camp site owner could keep the site fees down as they weren't having to make sure that the pitch fee was enough to cover potentially high electricity use. We only paid £21pn and that was over the August BH. Seems like the way forward to me, no idea though how much it costs to install that system and what the running costs are though.

Before Covid we spent several winters in Spain or Portugal. Metered electricity was commonplace, often with the first few Kw included in the low season price. And to cap it all, pitch fees were around ten euros per night - to us it was just as economical to tour Spain for three months in winter than to stay at home. Sadly, we have many sites where you can’t even choose not to have EHU even if your MH is all geared up for it. A big reason why we choose CL/CS and Temporary Holiday Sites now.

This year we spent approx 2 months in Germany mainly on their version of Aires. Lots if not all had electric points that charged per Kw or a set amount of time i.e 6 hours. Price compared to the UK was very reasonable like 60c per Kw.

Like the previous poster we to are now starting to use THS or weekend meetings of the CC in fact on our third THS on this trip, now in Whitby no electric with water and disposal for £12.50 per night. Good value, well that's your choice but for us yes.

Yes small world lol. Left today now in Leyburn. Needed gas and ended up filling tank with lpg in Stockton-on-Tees so here was a CC meet for just £7 and would be rude not to give it a go. Great open views only 7 + us . Half mile outside village. Flat field.
