david mcmillan
'Which Motorcaravan' report on Compass Calypsos, buying second-hand; not many cons. noted but I am compelled because of my experience to mention that over 9+ years my van suffered 5 broken mini-coil springs beginning at 15,000 miles! I now have an Autosleeper Gatcombe on the same V.W. chassis which suffered a mini- coil spring breakage at 14,000 miles!
Derek Uzzell
Can't say that greatly surprises me, as there's an awful lot of body for such a short and softly-suspended chassis. I've spoken to owners of VW-based Calypsos who had fitted 'helper springs' to the rear suspension, though I think these were primarily to combat roly-poly handling on tight bends/roundabouts and to improve stability at speed in windy weather. Might have taken some of the stress off the standard springs too, I guess.
