Brackpack
A question for someone with electrical knowledge. I need to carry around another battery in my car for use with some kit and was wondering if it is possible to trickle charge this battery , while in the boot, via the cigarette socket in the boot. If i plugged in a cable with the cig. lighter fitting on one end and a couple of crocodile clips on the other would this pass any unused power into this battery or am I being daft. Any help appreciated David
johnsandywhite
8-) Not a GOOD idea. Best way is to use a Split charge relay. ;-)
Beetle
Hi Dave. Yes what you describe would work, Idealy you would need to disconect the lead when you are stopped 'cause if you should have a defect in one of the batteries it would pull them both down. The alternative is to wire in a split charge relay as used on the auxillery battery in our vans. Trev.
johnsandywhite
:-D That's rather ironic. I was going to mention it was a BAD idea because if the battery in the boot was discharged too low? It could melt the cables or blow the lighter circuit fuse. *-)
Beetle
In theory you are right John, but in practice the only time you would have trouble was if you touched the two wires from the cigarette lighter together. (assuming the wires are reasonable amperage.) Trev.
johnsandywhite
(lol) The reason I mention melting cables is because I have been there and done that when I was in desperate need. (lol)
