Child of an Irish passport holder with an Irish great grandparent

My nieces have an Irish grandparent (my dad) so can obtain an Irish passport. Should they have children whilst they are an Irish passport holder will the child be eligible for an Irish passport?

Normally I would say not as I know a great grandchild cannot obtain an Irish passport by right but I fancy the fact the mother at time of birth holding an Irish passport may have a bearing on the matter. I can't seem to find any definitive proof of this though.

Anyone with knowledge of this peculiarity in rights?
