Grumpyman
Good morning My query is I have a Ford Transit base motorhome which has a capacity of twenty one litres of ad blue. the reading on the dashboard is 2400 miles left before filling up. If when full with a range of about six thousand miles how much additive would one put in at 2400 miles?. Grumpyman
Den
Hi Grumpyman with our minibus transits it very much depends on type of roads being used. when being used on the motorways we notice a higher use age than A & B roads. we now only use pump Adblu after having so much trouble with using container Adblu. I know this doesn’t answer your question but I guess you want to know to purchase a container suitable to fill your tank. we monitor closely our usage but it never works out to what we expect them to take at the pumps.

Manufacturers like Fiat do not recommend additives My Fiat Ducato 2.3 does about 350 miles per litre of ad-blu, it varies with the type of driving like fuel consumption. I always fill it to the top - but I have enlarged the vent holed in the cap because ab-blu, unlike fuel, is likely to dry out in the vent hole and block it - especially if you fill it to the top like I do. This has been known to cause a collapsed and leaking tank.
Grumpyman
Thank you both it seems an imponderable such as how long is a length of string.
onecal
Hi I take it by additive you mean just AdBlue to fill up. On your instrument cluster For your Ford Transit .Go into Maintenance and then AdBlue range and it will show you approx' litres you need to fill to the max. Never overfill the tank as it may cause damage . You can always fill at the pump (as Den recommends ) with fresh AdBlue and it will cut out when full preventing overfill Also if you do wish to use a 10 liter container (make sure it's within usable date) and with a spout attached place fully down into the AdBlue filler. When it's full it will stop and remove spout and slowly let it fill back into the container With both of these methods you will also get an approx' estimate of how many litres you need from your 2400mls or 3850 Klm for the next time you need to fill from the dash warning Remember always if using from a plastic container to use one that is in date and stored from direct sunlight (recommended by the makers and by so many who have had issues with out of date and contaminated AdBlue ) Why take a chance with any fluid you add to your vehicle if it is out of date or indeed contaminated ? Otherwise just fill as you would any usable fluid into your vehicle ! Of course don't let is spill on your paintwork Regards Edited July 11 by onecal
John52
I have used containers of ad-blu years out of date with no issues The main ingredient (urea) loses about half its strength over 30 years. So old ad-blue may lead to slightly higher emissions, - no manufacturer can say thats ok (think of the PR) so they have to say don't use it Even though chucking it and buying fresh causes higher emissions elsewhere because of the fossil fuels burned to produce ad-blu. onecal
Hi, Hope that helps you in determining approx' how much you may need for future adding of AdBlue in your Transit using the Dash method/container and pump dispenser from your warning dash Miles/Kilometers' left Regards

I'm not sure that's the case, as this earlier Grumpyman-initiated forum thread (in which you participated) asked about using the Wynn's anti-crystallisation additive for AdBlue that he had just bought. Assuming that GP has bought the Wynn's "Crystal Clean & Protect" additive, Wynn's advice is that the 125ml container is intended to treat up to 15 litres of AdBlue, while the 500ml container treats from 45-75 litres. It's most unlikely that the Wynn's additive's dilution-rate is hyper-critical, so - for a 21 litres AdBlue tank with 2400 'miles-worth' left out of a 6000 miles maximum - I'd put in about 125ml of additive now and about 200ml of additive each time the readout for the motorhome's AdBlue tank indicates it should be refilled. onecal
Hi , OK, If it is an additive he is actually referring to for his Ford Transit, as I posted this may be of some help. Just be very careful not to overfill the AdBlue tank as it can cause some issues Posted June 14 Hi Again the additive may of little use with heavy deposits of crystallization that may have formed over time It is designed to help prevent with light formation of crystallization. Filling your AdBlue tank with fresh AdBlue as per manufactures instructions and instructions on your container is usally the way to go Regards Edited July 12 by onecal
