My Hymer is insured with Comfort Insurance for 12 months continental driving. However, I cannot find an Insurer prepared to offer the same terms for the scooter I plan to carry in the garage of the motorhome. Nobody wants to know - unless YOU know better???

Hi Klaus Have you tried Bennetts (0800-0561618). As a wrinkly without a full motorbike licence I got comprehensive cover for self or wife riding a 49cc scooter which includes 45 days Euro cover. This was described to me as covering most countries in Europe, including some which are not EC members. Good luck Tony N

Well Tony - you are very quick on the button, I am pleased to note. Unfortunately, 45 days eurocover is insufficient for my purposes, as I plan to spend 8 months abroad and have been offered 90 days cover for the 125cc scooter. Many thanks for trying to help. Regards, Klaus

Norwich Union covers 'from' 90 days minimum in EU the motorcycle must be in UK for 6 months of the year.Perhaps that can be worked around ie:- year 1:- 6 months in UK followed by 6 months in EU, year 2:- 90 days in EU followed by 6 months plus in UK ? I expect you want to get away sooner than 6 months time. When I was younger I rode some big bikes, and had some taylor made "riders" policies fromt them. That was a long time ago but may be worth your time to give them a ring and ask what they can do now.

No offence taken Klaus, I was born in the days when motorbikes had square tanks, and hand gear change, so my information may be just as out of date. Hope you get the cover you seek.

My Science teacher at school had a Velocette LE with a hand gear change. My Dads bike a few years before that was a Sunbeam No1 Sports Special. Oh yes, A-Plan in Whitney Nr Oxford are the Motorcycle specialists of the A-Plan Group. If you still have problems they are worth a try, they do ours.

Klaus Also try Carole Nash, I have two classic motorcycles insured with them which costs the same as when I had my 125cc scooter. Always worth asking. Regards Neal

I beleive C.I.S will insure your scooter for long periods abroad, although not the cheapest on the market. John

Today I have spoken with my Scooter Insurance C.I.S Customer Services asking if there is any time restriction for useing the scooter in any EEC country and was told none so long as it's for pleasure / holidays use, and you are not working there !! As we are planning 3 months stay I though I was restricted to 90days but it appears no so all the better for next time. Regarding CIS not being the cheapest I could not get a better price last week when I renewed my policy under £58 with full n.c.b. can't be bad can it ? in the last few years its stayed about the same price give a pound I think its good value in today's market place . Hi Mike - you were correct with your suggestion of CIS. Unfortunately, I still could not pull it off as I have 3 speeding conviction - imagine,a 65 year old bloke! They did not like that. Many thanks for your help. regards, Klaus

Hi Klaus See you're still playing with the insurance problem. I've no axe to grind but Bennetts gave me fully comp plus legal cover with both wrinkly self and wife, neither of whom have ever had motorcycle licences and one of whom (I won't say which) has 2 speeding convictions, for £152. It could still be worth talking to them, if you haven't already. Failing that, the manufacturers may do something. I know that Vespa-Piaggio do cover for their bikes. Be lucky Tony N

HiTony My troubles are over! I should not have bothered with the "Specialist Bike Insurers" as they are all underwritten by the big boys. Suddenly it dawned on me: go to the horses mouth and - hey presto - Norwich Union obliged first time. Come 1.9. and we are off to spend the wnter in the Algarve. Many thanks to you and all who took the trouble to crack this one. Klaus.
