Somport tunnel or Col du Portalet

For those considering heading down to Spain this Autumn via the Pyrenees Atlantique route ... be aware of road problems. The Somport tunnel is closed for 6 months from September due to road damage caused by the recent heavy rains.

The Portalet pass which I used a week ago had a 3500Kg limit imposed by overhead gantry signs from the Spanish side after Jaca. I chose to ignore the signs as I was not prepared to drive back towards the St Jean-Pied-de-Port pass.  Many other over 3500kg motorhomes did the same coming from France to Spain. (Wearing Angles Mort stickers). We had no problems though. I have no idea if this limit was temporary?

So the only "legal" border crossings on the Western Pyrenees appear to be the St Jean-Pied-de-Port pass (Ibanetta or Roncevales) or Irun.

I imagine in poor Autumn weather, only Irun is viable?
