Sounds like good news. Biggest problem is finding satnavs that use Navteq maps??? Autoroute does but that is the only one I know

Garmin use Navteq

Hi :-D

I have just purchased a mobile phone, Benefon Twig(no camera, no MP3) but it does have Sat Nav with maps by NAVTEQ. I am very impressed by its performance especially that it will find another Twig and direct you to it. The down side is that I will not be able to lose my wife!!!! The advantage is that it is the same as a mobile phone - Amazon are selling them!

regards

richard

See, that sort of kit maybe justified in a car where it is used all the time but most of us need a system that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle....

unless rolling in it like you Michele ;-)

Hi Michele,

Hope you don't mind my asking, are you pleased with your Avic? Did you try other systems first? Can you get the information your first post speaks of with the Pioneer unit alone or did you have to buy a rapido too?

I've been looking at the avic for a while but can't quite get past the price so far. We need to upgrade the radio in our motorhome and are great supporters of satnav but our Tom Tom works well (I actually prefer the way it works to the satnav fitted by mercedes to our car!). I've not managed to speak to anyone so far who actually has one to see what they think

Thanks in advance and any info would be appreciated,

Lee

In next week's Auto Express will be their annual review of over 100 sat navs. If you are in the market you may not want to buy until after then?

Hi lee ,

Hubby is like every bloke he loves gadgets He also understands them has one of them computer programme minds . He swears by it just lately we lent it to a friend for the weekend . He also has a Sat nav in his car not sure of the make but expensive I remember that the first thing he said when returning back was how fantastic he found it .

What can I say according to hubby it does everything he wants it to do including TV camera all singing and dancing . Lee I,m sorry he has just gone to bed finished early shift but when he wakes I will get him to speak more on a guys level.

I know he is more than happy with it . ;-)Lee forgot my daughter has the Tom Tom and hubby curses it ? and this is a bloke who can get his head around things . Our old Sat Nav was a Nav Man & a Garmin he wouldn't go back to them . No we do not have a Rapido only a Bessacarr .

Lee just to add I,m probably talking rubbish as I do but a couple got stuck in the Vendee France their Sat Nav couldnt find anything for them ours found it instantly ? I dont know what that means :$

Hi Tracker,

And thanks for the input. Unfortunately all of the reviews I've ever seen comparing satnavs only ever seem to compare the small, detachable, pocket units. I've never yet seen one that looks at the Avic or similar high-end, fixed, after-market units. I will keep my eye out for that one in case it's the exception though.

Thanks Michele, If your husband's got anything to add I'd be interested, but sounds like it's as good as it should be for the extra money.

Hi lee sorry been O&A.

Hubby said ...............

It is an expensive Navigation System, as in you can get better Navigation systems for alot less money .

This is because it can be the heart of a total incar entertainment system .

It is possible to run CD auto changers external audio sources playback video cam corders & use as the rear view camera as well as the GPS system you can add additional monitors it depends on how long you intend keeping it and what you intend doing with it .

I wouldn't comapre it with others because they all have there advantanges it has a lovely screen and reacts quickly others with smaller screens do the same job and cost a fraction of the price

Everytime you leave the van take off the very small face off and dont have to worry.

I think if we had a stand alone GPS we would have to take it off the dash disconnect the wires and tuck the display out of sight .

If they want it they can just rip it out the dash all I want to show to the insurance company is the face off .

I would never have a Navigation System like this in a normal car but funnily enough in the van we never worry about it .

Would I buy it again Yes I wouldn't hesitate its good enough a system that pioneer will continue to produce newer maps and can be transfered to a new vehicle.

The new version is Blue tooth for the telephones, not our version you can get a module to make it blue tooth and our version is right down in price now you can pick them up around £800/900.

I,m not sorry I bought it. Good luck in your choice. ;-)

Is there any Sat-Nav system,at any price ,that will take into account the type of Vehicle that it is Navigating ( mine has Walking route or cycling route) or do they all assume that we are driving a Motorbike and not a Motorhome. Are there any Downloadable POI's that list width restricted roads ? I've found one for Low Bridges which is good, I just need it to stop sending me down impossibly narrow lanes. Even using a map and good old common sense,it still catches me out on occasions. :D

The only Sat Nav I know of that you can alter for the type of vehicles you are driving is Co-Pilot, we had it a few years back and, although it drove us nuts then, there was an RV option on it. This is a link to the new PDA version which says under Routing options that there is still an RV quickest and RV shortest option. This seems to mean that it assumes your vehicle is up to 12'6" high and I assume has a wider girth than a standard car. Not tried it though so couldn't say for sure.

There's some detail about it here:
