Is this "cover" via dealers trade plates or "temporary import plates" which are 3rd party cover only.

where are you importing from.

It is normal to arrange fully comprehensive insurance on VIN number which kicks in once you arrive in UK.

you do nothing at border. Get a "import pack" from DVLA and it explains all and is free, Plus it contains all necessary forms for paying VAT, registering vehicle etc...

make sure dealer gives you an invoice and COC ( certificate of conformity)

As far as VAT is concerned, on a new vehicle you will normally have to pay the dealer when you buy, then pay once again when you declare the vehicle to HMCE.

You then claim back your original VAT from the dealer, who if you're lucky might release the funds on registration rather than on proof payment of the VAT to HMCE, so that you don't have to shell out twice and have to wait for one to be refunded.

Don't be scared to ask.

Not always, some dealers will let you export VAT free on the understanding you supply them with copy of VAT cert once paid in UK.

Come on then Paul, what did you get? :-D
