You will find a lot of ads in the MMM for insurance, we have found Comfort insurance very helpful it is run by motorhomers for motorhomers and they understand the questions you ask them whereas some companies when you ask motorhome specific questions they are not sure so Comfort is a good starting point for you. also wellcome to the world of motorhomeing it is a great hobby and I am sure you will get anwsers to your questions on the forum. Carol.

I'm sure I'm telling you something you already know but do shop around. We've recently re-insured and quotes varied by several hundred pounds for the same cover. It even varied by £200 between brokers for the same insurance company - Equity Red Star. We used Caravan & Camping Club's service. Previously with MTC who up until this year have given us competitve quotes. Comfort were among one of the dearest but we've had a few claims over the past 5 years having been very unlucky with windscreens ( 4 times!) and vandalism.

I imported new in April this year and after research found "safeguard" competitive and offering good cover. plus it includes European breakdown cover as well. (handy when you run out of fuel as we did *-) )

Hi thanks for your advice. We need all the help we can get first time round. We are off to our home in Spain soon in our car and we want european breakdown, when we get our motorhome we would like to just ring up and transfer etc. At the moment we are with Saga we have read their breakdown service but it seems our motorhome is about half and inch to wide.

We use Comfort, who I have found pleasant to deal with, responsive, and competetive.  However, different drivers, different locations etc, so it will pay to shop around.  Make sure you get specimen copies of the policy document with any quotes, it is the fine print that counts!

Comfort have no limitation on motorhome size, and the European breakdown cover is about a £55 option.  This can be extended to cover a second vehicle, which also gives the driver "personal" cover, for a little more.

However, their main advantage for us is that if you add health cover and home and contents cover, you can specify the periods you wish to spend away from home.  You can then enjoy reasonable peace of mind that the vehicle, the house and contents, and your travelling health package, are all co-ordinated around whatever period of absence you have agreed.  This overcomes the difficulty with so many buildings and contents packages, which reduce cover if you are away more than 30 days, some restricting absence to 60 days max.

The policies are all from Norwich Union, though not available directly from Norwich, so are from a reputable firm with a generally good record in dealing with claims.  Another reason for peace of mind.

Some seem to have had unsatisfactory results from their web-based quotes, so I think it is probably best to phone.  Quotes usually follow within 24/48 hours.

hi,

we bought our first motorhome this summer, we decided to go with safeguard for the following reasons,

1) they where over £200 cheaper than the nearest quote

2) they "cloned" my no claims discount from my car, i.e i have full no claims on the car and didn't want to take them off for obvious reasons. so safeguard issued me with the full no claims discount without having to swap,

3) free european cover

4) free breakdown asssistance including european assistance,

5) apart from all the free extras not listed including free car hire etc incase of an accident, they where extremely friendly and helpful.

and most importantly of all, they are a motorhome only specialist company.

please do shop around though, i did and im glad i did, i was amazed at some of the differences in quotes!!

safeguard get the thumbs

My M/H insurance renewal is due next month we are presently covered by caravanguard which was a free add on when we bought the M/H I have had a ring around to-day and lost count of how many companies I have tried , but having said that although I will have to read through the written quotes when they drop through the post 3 companies seem to come to where I want to be for the cover I require 1.Comp protected NCD 2. European cover 3 Legal cover 4 Breakdown cover UK / Europe. and they are 1 Safeguard 2 Comfort 3 Adrian Flux. no doubt you all have your preferences , but has anyone got any bad experiencies with any of these companies.

We (I) have been insured through the Caravan Club for many years. Costs are under £200:00 p.a. fully comp for a 2007 'old shape' Boxer Autohome 150.

O.kay , we do not have European breakdown cover but I do not have U.K. breakdown cover neither! Being an optomist I never seen a breakdown on the horizon!!

When considering which insurance co. to go for check how much the maximum claim amount is for windscreen's, Caravanguard only cover upto £1000 this I found out to my expense this year when some **** put a brick through the screen, cost £1900 to replace, Safeguard I beleive offer an unlimited amount and when I looked earlier this year seemed to offer a good deal.
