starvin marvin
I'm getting nervous, I'm having a refillable cylinder fitted on Monday ready for a long trip away through France to Spain and Portugal. This will give me a 6kg refillable and a 6kg UK Propane. I've been checking out various postings on the subject of filling up with LPG in Spain and looked at the web site suggested by Don Madge and others. I don't have Stat Nav or a laptop while I'm away so I need to know where suitable filling stations are before we leave. The addresses for filling stations on the web site don't seem useful at all. I've checked the first one listed on my map and the N road number doesn't match with the suggested location at all. I was stupidily assuming that the major autoroute filling stations in Spain rather like France would probably all sell LPG, but the advice on the postings is no. Are there any better address lists for the sale of LPG in Spain?
derek500
It's a difficult one. Here in Spain bottled gas is a way of life. Most petrol garages sell it, it's delivered free to houses etc. and it's cheap - currently 12.60€ for a 12.5kg bottle. I've looked on Spanish MH forums and the subject of refillables doesn't come up. I know, as Don Madge once pointed out that refillables are useful if you have mobility/lifting problems but the main reason for installing seems to be economic, especially with the overpriced Calor gas in the UK. I would seriously consider having some sort of non refillable backup in place. Driving maybe hundreds of kilometers just to get 6kg of gas will be a nightmare! Don Madge
Tony, How long do you intend to stay in Spain? You might have to rethink your plans as Derek has already pointed out. Do you have the locations for refilling your bottles on the Algarve? If not I can post them for you. Don
starvin marvin
Thanks Derek and Don for the response. Derek, I do have a back up to the refillable, its a 6kg UK propane, but I always also carry a camping gaz 907. Don, my thoughts are that for the 3 days it will take for us to get from home to St Jean de Luz we will use the refillable and then fill it up again before we leave France. 2 days to get to the Costa Blanca and then stay for approx 30 days max on a site before moving on towards Portugal. Allow 5/7 days to trundle across the south of Spain. Should be on the Eastern Algarve say Tavira towards the end of January. We will be weather driven, if its not good we'll go south earlier. Then three weeks going up through Portugal, followed by a dash across northern Spain and back up through France. Derek, our vehicle is an IH Savannah Tio, Fiat 2.8JTD similar to your Timberland, how do you manage on your longer trips abroad? The real snag for me is not knowing were I can refill in Spain. We will use electricity as much as possible to reduce gas consumption including a twin ring electric hob, following Jo Vaughan's example in Out and About, she wrote an article called "Spain on a Shoestring" Thanks again your comments are much valued.
