tom tom gps

Hi, I don't know anything about the TomTom but I'm fairly sure that most modern satnavs allow you to navigate to gps co-ordinates. My Mio does, there is a box on the page where you put the address or the post code in specifically for co-ordinates. If you select that then you have the choices of entry by decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and seconds.

Hi Sooty,

Have you downloaded all of the updates from Tom Tom home. I bought my 700 a couple of years ago and it didn't have the latitude/longitude facility but it came with one of the free updates.

Way to Go will probably fill you in with all of the details.

John

Many Tomtom devices allow you to navigate to a destination given in terms of latitude/longitude or in terms of a GPS position that you have previously recorded yourself.

The Tomtom web page at

http://www.tomtom.com/support/support.php?ID=3&Language=1

allows you to download the manual for many recent satnavs including several in the 700 series. You should find an explanation there.

Here is a link to the manual for the Go 700

Thanks for your help, just been on the tom tom website. I have downloaded all the latest updates. Now I have another problem, my tom tom just has blank screen and will not shut down. I will wait for the battery to run down and hope it restarts. Will keep you posted.

Hi sooty my 300 has a small hole underneath, if you poke a needle or similar into it, it turns the tomtom off and resets the system. Its in the manual if you have a copy, or download it from tomtom.

This from their website:

How can I reset TomTom GO? (GO users only)

You should never have to reset TomTom GO under normal circumstances. However, in the event of a problem you can reset the unit by removing it from the cradle and using a straightened paper clip in the reset hole on the unit's bottom (just behind the release button).

PS you shouldn't be manually downloading and installing updates, download and install "tomtom Home" to your computer, connect your tomtom up, and it checks for updates, downloads them (with your permission) and installs them.

I do not have a TomTom 700 but I have Tom Tom running on a PDA and I think the software is similar.

To navigate to a Gps position,

Main Menu > Navigate To> Then move to next screen which shows, Point On Map and Latitude/Longitude.

Select Latitude/Longitude Enter Latitude first remembering to chose North or South, Select "Done" Enter Longitude remembering to chose West or East, select Done.

If you want to show the Lat/Lon position on the map:

Select Menu 2, Select "Browse Map", Select "Find", Select next Screen, Select "Latitude, Longitude."

Enter co-ordinates as above.

If you have problems come back to me.

Doug

Sorry to hijack your thread but well it is kind of Tom Tomish.

I saw a reference in one of the motorhome mags recently (last 2 or 3 months).

About a POI update that contains 5000 (allegedly) UK sites, can I find it now no way.

Did anyone else see it ??.

By the way MMM why dont you put an index of Websites referred to in articles in the back somewhere, I am always having this problem, I save my mags up and read them in the van see no WEB access there.

I update my go 910 monthly there has been 3 updates since version 7 came out, the latest being 7.163 you will also find that with mapshare there seems to be an up date each month. so its worth updating monthly for the map corrections, and GPS fix.

After disconnecting your tom tom the screen will go blank,as the unit reconfiguers its self. just leave it on, do not try to turn off, it won,t respond mine takes a few minuets before it sorts its self out, and the last screen you were using will come up. Make sure it is fully charged or plugged in to the charger when connecting to the computer.

I have a TomTom 700 and it allows me to navigate to co-ordinates. The unit must be updated to the latest software version (7.1xx) via TomTom Home. It takes two downloads though if your TT is relatively "old", the first time you connect to "Home" it will update to version 6.xxx. Reconnect and it will allow a further update to version 7, this has the option "Navigate to: Latitude Longitude"

Hope that helps.

. . . and don't forget to backup your SD card before you start. I'd be inclined to use explorer in your PC as opposed to using TomTom HOME.

Hi Mike,

You do if you buy a new one, don't know about existing owners. This includes software program and map updates. Also with TT Home you can upload your map alterations and download others map alterations, you can choose whether to accept only verified by TT ones or ones reported by a number of users or if you are brave (foolish??) enough any reported errors or changes.
