Engine Starter Battery

Hi.

My current motorhome is a Laika 7r which when connected to an electric hook up allows me a choice of which battery to charge (engine or leisure).

I am about to take delivery of a 2008 Chausson Welcome 75.

It appears that this choice is not available and that the system only charges the leisure battery.

Can any owners of the latest model Chaussons confirm please, and if this is a fact offer any solution.(ie Battery Master)

Kind Regards

These are a couple of earlier forum threads that you may find useful:

Within these threads I mentioned my Hobby's CBE-manufactured electrical system, and I subsequently confirmed that this did indeed charge the motorhome's engine-battery automatically when the vehicle was on 230V hook-up (just as CBE's Operating Instructions said it should).

I know that Chausson fitted a similar CBE system to 2004/2005 Welcome models and, presumably, this also performed engine-battery charging in tandem with leisure-battery charging. So there's a reasonable likelihood that, if Chausson continues to employ a CBE system on Welcome models, this dual-charging feature will be incorporated. I've got a 2007 Chausson brochure, but this has no photo of the electrical control-panel used on Welcomes. There is a photo of the Allegro's panel and the PC-200 marking on it suggests that this is a CBE product. Anyway, I think there's a sporting chance current Chausson Welcome motorhomes may have as standard a charging system that allows leisure-battery + engine-battery charging. Hopefully, if this facility is present, it will be mentioned in the literature that comes with your Welcome 75 - either in the Chausson handbook or (if it's included) the leaflet relating to the electrical system.

If it transpires that your Welcome has no standard capability to charge its engine-battery via a 230V hook-up, then the forum threads mentioned above offer several options. (The CBE product I referred to as "CSB.2" is now described in the (2007) CAK catalogue as "CAK Battery Charge Manager BCM12" and costs about £22.)

Derek,

Many thanks for your very helpful response.

I hope to set off for Spain a few days after delivery staying about 8 weeks on site. I do not wish to worry during this time wondering if the drain on the engine battery from alarm and radio etc would prevent starting when required.

External charging or jump starting on these later ECU engines seem to fraught with concerns.

Kind Regards

I've been in contact with RDH Motorhome Centre about this, as they are normally well clued-up on Chaussons.

They told me that (as you suspected) the current (2008) Welcome range has NO facility to charge the engine-battery when the motorhome is on 230V hook-up - the only way the engine-battery receives charge is via the vehicle's alternator when the motor is running.

Pity about that, but better to find out now than when in Spain.
