Motorhome Insurance

I know that this topic has been covered before, and I have used the 'search' facility to see if this specific subject appears.

My motorhome insurance is due for renewal at the end of the month, and have begun the bewildering trawl throught the various companies to find the best deal.

The best on price so far is Comfort Insurance, which offers what appears to me to be an amazing breakdown cover 'add-on'.

For an extra £55 I can get UK & European Home/Roadside/Repatriation cover for my 13 year-old motorhome, and for another £55, the same for my car.

This is cheaper than my current UK breakdown cover for my car.

Usually if something looks too good to be true it is, or I have mis-read something somewhere.

Has anyone got any comments - good or bad - on Comfort Insurance and am I correct in my understanding of what I think I've been offered?

Hi Janine, seems like a good price. Have you had a quote from Safeguard? Their quotes include AA cover as you describe. I have used the service at home and in France - just lucky I guess!- and the response was excellent. Good luck.

Janine,

Comfort are one of the top two motorhome inurance intermediaries, they specialist in motorhome cover and have an excellent reputation.

BTW, motohome insurance is NOT like car insurance - you should not buy it purely on price. First, you must buy it from an experienced motorhome intermediary (broker) because they will be so much better at processing claims. Secondly, make sure it covers all the things you are likely to want to do - for example, that it has adequate maximum single trip length.

Thank you for your responses.

I have been with Safeguard for the last three years, but they automatically include cover for two drivers, and won't reduce the premium for just me.

They are nearly £100 more expensive than Comfort.

I've had a competitive quote from Highways via Sure Term which is like-for-like with Safeguard & Comfort, but I've never heard of them.

I've used MCIA at www.lifesure.co.uk or 0871 726 1245 for the last five years and I find them offering good cover (incl breakdown cover if you want it - but I use RAC Arrival) at a fair price.

Suggest you try Caravan Guard who include European and UK breakdown cover. Special rates for MMM readers. My quotes in April 2007 Caravan Guard £288, Comfort £462 and SafeGuard £346. Included Protected no claims and £100 excess. Caravan Guard slightly better for minor items. I am 63 with 4 years no claim bonus.

This has nothing to do with this topic but a warning to those of advancing years.

We decided 10 years ago when we were in our mid sixties to stay with the same insurer instead of shopping around to save a few pounds each year.

At that time a friend in his seventies who had shopped around and changed insurers almost every year found it very difficult to insure his motorhome because of his age.

Because we do a lot of travelling to places that many insurers won't cover we finally chose Comfort (Norwich Union) and have been with them for ten years. We also have the combined house/travel/medical cover with them.

Comfort are specialised motorhome insurers and we are more than happy with our premiums especially with three named drivers.

It would be interesting to hear from any "Golden Oldies" on the forum to see how they are making out.

Safe travelling.

Don

I used to insure my motorhome with Comfort (its on my business insurance now) but I never needed to make a claim. A friend of mine did however, he and his young family were in France when a truck ripped the side clean off their motorhome. One phone call to Comfort and they were recovered from the scene of the accident, takne back to their campsite to collect their free standing awning and belongings then driven to Calais and onto the ferry. On landing in Dover they and their vehicle were transferred to a UK recovery lorry that was waiting for them. This lorry took them home, waited while they unloaded all their belongings and then took the motorhome straight to a specialist repair shop. They were back home within 24 hours of the accident and the motorhome in the repair shop. This was about ten years ago but that is the kind of service you want.

As Don says - it should not only be about money - it is also about service and support when you need it most - so be careful about switching every year just to save a few quid.

Hello Mel, your post suggests a "league table", (top two), and the excellent reputation, please could you post your source (s) for this invaluable info or is it based on personal experiences etc?

Many thanks, Martyn

I also have the Comfort (RAC) breakdown cover.

I was in the wilds of Portugal in March 2007 when I had a wheel bearing go on me. I contacted the RAC at 1700 hrs on Sunday 4th March and the wheel bearing was replaced in 48 hours. That is good going.

There are size limits on 'normal' RAC cover but the 'Arrival' scheme through the CCC has no size or weight limits and the RAC will even tow you off a muddy site - as long as it does not risk getting stuck itself.

I too am with MICA. Been with them since new 2003. When renewing I always question the price and they usually lower it. They also have european breakdown cover organised through Europassist and last year it was £65 for the year and included breakdown in UK.

Touch wood I have not had reason to use either but am sure they will be as good as any other.

Try a quote from C.I.S. co-op insurance.......£19.25 per month. Paid in one lump for 12 months, just over £200. I only paid them £9-19-11 per year for my first motorhome, sorry to show my age, it was an Austin 3 litre with no synchromesh, all double-de-clutch, real motoring. And it had a "rotory action manual commencer" (starting handle)

Quick update on this thread - I found the catch in the Comfort insurance quote before I bought it:-

The breakdown cover DOES NOT include getting your van home from anywhere in the UK or Europe - it's roadside or nearest garage only.

Luckily I persisted and proved the adage 'if it looks too good to be true, it usually is'!

Hi Janine,

Can you say where you got the details from because I've just spoken to Comfort to confirm that they do repatriate the vehicle if it cannot be repaired abroad.

Policy Document page 26 para 10 Vehicle repatriation to the UK.

We will pay for The cost of taking your vehicle by road transporter from abroad to your house or UK repairer.

There are exceptions of course.

Perhaps it is because of the age of my motorhome but it says the following:

"ENDORSEMENT 218 RAC PERSONAL COVER - HORIZON ADVANTAGE PLUS

Parts XII & XIII of your Policy also applies

The following cover is provided within the territorial limits shown on the policy for any private car you are travelling in, whether you are a driver or passenger:

1. Someone to come and help. If it cannot be repaired immediately it will be taken to a nearby garage where repairs can be made.

2. Assistance if the vehicle you are intending to travel in will not start while parked at its normal residence.

ENDORSEMENT 220 RAC PERSONAL COVER - DESIGNATED VEHICLE HORIZON ADVANTAGE PLUS

Parts XII & XIII of your Policy also applies

The following cover is provided within the territorial limits shown on the policy to Vehicle Registration Number M126PUX on any driver basis.

1. Someone to come and help. If it cannot be repaired immediately it will be taken to a nearby garage where repairs can be made.

2. Assistance if the vehicle you are intending to travel in will not start while parked at its normal residence. "

I've only got endorsement 221 on my policy, which gives me full breakdown cover and I don't have the PLUS cover either.

I've just spoken to Comfort again and they claim the 10 year age restriction only applies to your car cover not the motorhome in the HORIZON ADVANTAGE PLUS policy. I assume you have taken out the PLUS to cover your car as well.

I might have got it wrong but Comfort have always stated there is no restrictions on weight/height/length/age for there motorhome cover.

You should definitely check this with Comfort before you give up.

Section XIII is clearly stated to be in addition to section XII, and the motorhome recovery provision is contained in section XII.  The stated recovery exclusions (p26) are only: a) if the cost of recovery would be greater than the market value of the vehicle, or b) if the vehicle is unroadworthy.  Either seem reasonable to me.

Section XIII (P33) specifically states that it is an extension to section XII, under which a) someone will come to you and take the vehicle to a repairer etc, b) "homestart" cover, and c) "personal cover" so that you can call RAC if someone else's car in which you are travelling breaks down in UK or Europe.

It seems you have this cover under endorsement 218.

You can also extend the cover for one additional vehicle, and it seems you have done this under endorsement 220.

Like Don, I believe you are misreading the policy, possibly by applying the Section XIII exclusions to section XII?  The territorial limits are on page 5, and shouldn't cause you any concerns.  However, if M126PUX is your motorhome, I think there is a error in your policy, as that should be the reg no of your designated second vehicle.

Hi Brian,I am interested in this debate as I usually look round for better quotes at renewal so was interested in the cover offered here, however you have just given me cause for concern with the recovery exclusions above, as what would happen in the event of an accident and the vehicle was 'unroadworthy' would that exclude it from recovery then?Bas
