Wirralian
Hi Hope you well informed people out there can help me. I had the van serviced last week and advised that new front tyres may be required before next year. I am shortly travelling through France to Spain and considering buying new tyres beforehand. But would I be better off buying them in France or Spain. If everything else is to go by, will they be much cheaper? I am after the Michelin camping car tyres. There was suggestion a while back that these were hard to get.
Ivys
We went for Michelin Agilis, and although purchased in Bulgaria would have been cheaper here at Costco. They make a HUGE difference to traction. I can't see any reason why I would change to another tyre having experienced the advantages of a winter tyre. I know however that in summer the stopping distance will be slightly longer than a summer tyre, but that our traction on wet grass will still be better. I understand that although the camping tyres are good for weight (especially when overweight) they are a bit slippery (I recall reading this in several forum threads - not my own experience or opinion). The last thing we wanted when in Bulgaria was slip, and we were OK on weight. Rog
Mel E
The last time I checked online, tyres were more expensive in France - but only by a tad. Fitting is still a lot cheaper. Michelin Camping Car tyres will normally be a special order - rarely held in stock as they are so specialist. Any quality van tyre of the correct rating should do the job. You can check online by looking at the companies that supply online and either come and fit to your location or have a network of linked dealers. I haven't checked for Spain, but tyres used to be cheaper there. Since the Euro, however, differences with the UK have degraded considerably. Mr. Grumpy
I had to buy a Michelin tyre for my Fiat in France last autumn and it cost £140 including "free fitting" but I had no time to shop around. I bought a second from http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/home.asp when I got back to England, the cost including fitting £90.
Brian Kirby
Do remember that with the Euro is currently around 1.35 to the £ Sterling. Last year's prices converted at around 1.40 to the £, so the cost today will be quite sharply less favourable. Get the new ones before you go, and benefit from having new tyres for the whole trip. I doubt you'll save a great deal buying elsewhere, and you won't lose your home into a fitting bay while away!
terry1956
In answer, had the same thing late last year, our hymer is on france plates, as it spends all year there, the cost of one tire fitted was 173 euros, that was for a michelin 16 inche campervan tire, it took 24 hours for them to get the tire and fit, michael
Hymer C 9.
Ours were just under £100 each fitted the proper Mitchlen Camping Car ones. Carol.
