argyler
Hi, there was a piece in this months MMM about smokey Transits. Having owned a few - here's a thought. Like most things in a motorhome everything will wear out at a lower mileage if the beast isn't used regularly. This applies to engine bits as well as tyres, steering joints, brakes etc. At some point a smokey deisel will need new injectors. With a motorhome I would not be surprised at 60K miles. DO NOT have refurbished injectors. Go for Stanadyne as I did with Argyle Diesel Electrics in East Kilbride. Fantastic improvement! No, I am not related. Awra best - happy travelling. Ventoux
My 1989 Ducato engine has been smoking since it overheated big time on an Italian mountain last summer, the fan didn't kick in. How much are new injectors?
Derek Uzzell
Ventoux: Doubtful that replacement injectors would help in your case, I think. Overheating can cause significant damage to a motor and you really need to seek expert advice on this. Leakage at the cylinder-head to engine-block joint might be a possiblity if the smoking is very severe.
Ranger
Have you thought that engine oil may be getting drawn down the induction valve stems? You could take the rocker box off and check if they are a tight fit, not easy to see. Hard to tell if it is diesel smoke or engine oil smoke. A friend of mine (after all else failed) stopped his diesel 4X4 smoking by fitting an EMAG, the smoke stopped after about 20 minutes. Although "experts!" say they do nothing, I put one on my petrol 4X4 tow car and the blackened inside of the tail pipe turned light grey after a 1000 odd miles and the engine oil stayed fairly clean from then on. Obviously for some reason or other, EMAG or not? I was getting a better 'burn'.
terry1956
hi all, smokey deisel engines can be down to many things, In the case of the over heated engine, I would say a fault in the cylinder head, this is common on big toyota diesels like the 4.2 land cruiser with their alloy heads. My Hymer was pouring out the smoke on overrun, along with a loss of power, needed new injectors, runs like a new engine just great. my old disco always had gray smoke pooring from it, at night I could see it in the head lights of the cars behind, found out someone at turned the metering unit up to get more power, but the engine was over fueling as a result. Without the tools to sort diesel engines out, and these cost to much for a diy person, it will always end up with a call to a garage, to keep a diesel engine running well, alway change the engine oil, around 5000 miles along with makers filter, use fuel cleaner once on each 4th tank full, cost of this is around 50 cents in europe. and it will run and run, also make sure the fan comes on, on older motorhomes fit a manual switch as back up. terry
Ventoux
The smoke was most visible on uphill stretches of road. Its not so bad now actually. I am no mechanic but i'm not losing oil or water and neither seem contaminated with the other if that means anything. I will take it to a specialist diesel garage before setting off this year. Thanks for the advice.
