power or lack of it

i, has anyone any ideas to squeeze a bit more umph from a 2.5 non turbo boxer or any faults encountered that have been the cause.i'm reluctant to spend money with tb turbo. i have looked briefly at adding propane injection which on the face of it sounds good, propane acts as a catalyst & greatly improves the burning of the fuel, hence more power & cleaner emissions.has anyone any experience of this.the general mechanics are not a problem but it's a fair bit of work to waste

Depends how old it is! If its pre computer control with a mechanical diesel pump (like my old land rover) then a quarter of a turn on the maximum fuel screw on the pump will make a significant difference to its umph, but also smoke. So you will have to wind it back at MOT time. Not very green though! If its got a brain box then aparently fitting a resistor in parallel with a particular sensor can achieve similar results. Lots of ads on Ebay for these. But again not very green. Good luck

Hi barrie Like you I put up with the lack of oomph on our Pug Normally Aspirated 2.5 and tried various things including upping the fuel (carried out by a deisel specialist. Nothing was a significant enough improvement for me though and I eventualy decided to trade it in, only to find no dealer was interested, except at silly prices, because it was non turbo and quote "nobody wants non turbo motorhomes anymore". So I bit the bullet and had TB install their kit. I have to say it was the best thing I did and I would thoroughly reccomend them and the kit. I have had it fitted for 3 years now with faultless performance. Power is up to really good and easy cruising (25% increase in BHP, from before and after tests at TB, and they said it was good for one of those before they started too)even up steep hills. It is quieter and it does more to the gallon than before (up in the low 30's now, 25 to 28 before). I no longer wish to sell it, did not really want to in the first place, and I am assured it will retain a better resale value if I do. So without knowing the reason for your reluctance I would still say that is the best route to go.

thanks for your replies. my reason for reluctance is i'm afraid purely financial ralph. i feel though i must do something before we head for spain again as those long inclines become embarassing when you pull to the right and trucks have to pull out to pass you,(guess you've been there)

Hi again barrie Yes you are quite right, it was overtaking a coach following a lorry on the M5. I had just passed the coach and was up to the tail of the lorry at a closing speed that seemed to be less than walking pace when we came to a very minor incline, the lorry pulled away the coach driver leaned on the horn and nearly pushed me into the outside line of cars as he pulled across my bows and overtook the lorry. That was the point that I said damn the expense and booked up for TB after returning from the holiday, in my mind justifying it purely on safety grounds. I did not really want to have to pay what is a not inconsiderable amount of money but I have to admit it was worth it. With cruise control fitted as well it really is effortless. Strangely although TB's installation is low boost compared to the standard set up having driven a friends vehicle of the same type and model but with standard turbo from new, there is no difference in performance that is noticable but the fuel consumption is better on the TB. We have been all over Europe with her since the installation and hill and mountain climbing is fine now and we keep up with the traffic flow without difficulty.
