Flip-up screen Radios

Have been looking at a Flip-up screen Radio (DVD Player) to replace the standard one supplied by Fiat supplied

. >:-(

I was thinking I could use the screen for my Reversing (& rear view)Camera.

(I am always concerned that, the normal screen sat on the dash, some tea leaf might think it is a Sat Nav and take a liking to it.)

When I discussed it in Hhalfords the sales guy said that although it has the facility to connect up a Camera, you can't have the screen out & viewable when the engine is switched on.

Does anyone have or know if there is this type of Radio were the screen can be viewed whilst travelling

Hi John, most of these systems that I've seen can be used for a reversing camera while driving. There should be an electrical interlock to block DVD or TV playing on the screen while the vehicle is moving. This is usually acchieved by connecting a signal wire to the handbrake switch although some systems take a signal from the vehicle's road speed signal. If either type of interlock is used then it can be bypassed/not connected to allow the screen to stay open while driving. As long as you don't watch a DVD or TV while on the move there is no problem.

Dave is quite correct.

I've just replaced a Pioneer unit in my 'van as it started to play up.

The main controls for the unit (including radio, CD etc.) were via the touchscreen, so it is designed to have the screen out whilst in use (and travelling).

It is illegal to drive with either a TV or DVD player active and in line of sight by the driver. AFAIK, however, though the unit has an 'inhibitor' connector (mine was supposed to be via the handrake switch circuit) it is not a legal requirement to have the inhibitor connected. In any case, it would appear only to inhibit the illegal functions, use of the reversing camera not being one of those.

I think you've been given misleading info at Halfords.

Thanks for coming up with the info Dave & Robin.

Just what I wanted,

Not really interested in the TV / DVD capability, but would like a fold away rear view screen.

I have seen some Roadpro units in Halfords, so will have a search on the web to check for any other makes but I think it is beyond my DIY capabilities. Then I'll try to find a local ICE specialist to see what they can do for me.

DIY fitting isn't too bad.....but if you can't fit a standard radio, forget it.

The biggest issue is the number of connections and wires at the back is significantly greater with these units, and the clearance can be quite limited. It makes the final insertion of the unit pretty difficult.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spoke to a local Car radio / Audio Comapny and they were only able to offer a Pioneer unit at £700 with the ability to connect up the Reversing Camera.

This seems a bit steep to me.

Has anyone gone done the route of using the Radio flip-up screen for their Reversing Camera

Can anyone advise any models suitable for this use.

Internet info I have viewed appears not to cover this function

Mornin' John, just had a quick five minute lookee round the web and found this unit on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/7-Auto-TOUCHScr-DVD-TV-FM-AM-USB-SD-MP4-BLUETOOTH-New_W0QQitemZ260211115725QQihZ016QQcategoryZ67772QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

(sorry for the long link, I don't know how to do those tiny link things yet) but for £215 it does just about everything including bluetooth for hands free mobile phone calls. Installation shouldn't be too complex, I'd reckon about an hour.

I have just bought a 7" drop down lcd screen with tv receiver for £49.00 inc P&P.

Its B graded which in this case means the aerial lead has been cut and the retaining clip is faulty, however, the screen stays shut just as well as it should, and as I want it for a reversing camera and additional dvd while we are parked, it's perfect.

It has reverse view mode, so any camera can be used, there is also 2 down lights in the unit.

The normal one (without above faults) was £99.00 so half price suits me.

Next day delivery is included.

The company's web site is www.in21now.co.uk and they sell all sorts of goodies.
