sky card

hi all,

i wondered if anyone can help with a question i have? i have a sky set up in my motorhome with a pace 12volt sky box fed by a camos dome.

by more luck than judgement my sky card from my home box works a treat in my van, i know that sky poo poo the idea that people with motorhomes and caravans are using the same card at home as the one in the van and would rather we purchase yet anouther package and card, as if they dont make enough money.

sorry,i digress, the question is this, im thinking of giving sky even more of my hard earned cash by investing in sky+ at home but i am worried that i will need a new card to operate sky+ and this may not work in my pace box in my van? has anyone tried this?

it might be a good idea, having seen the number of dishes in use on campsites to give us motorhomers a package of our own, i would have no objection paying a few quid a year for a card that is not in everyday use,

but i think it unfair to pay double the subcription for something that is mainly only used on occaisional holidays, weekends, etc. what are your thoughts????

Hello ,

We have a 12v box and we regulaly take the card from the house with us and they pair it up . This is a pain .

We bought a free to air card from sky this just gives us the basic channels for our 12 v when not on the leccky . We also take our box from the front room when we go .

If you go away often enough then its worth keeping the new card alligned to the 12v box .

We have sky plus and we take the box from the front room an the card we have is the card that fits it ie belongs to that box in the front room .

Whne plugged in we get the lot I hope I am making sense in other words pay £10 a month and that will devote a card to your 12 volt box .

Hope this helps.

Hi Brian

From my understanding of things to do with Sky, I've been told that the dish will also have to be upgraded to accept Sky+.Generally with a second LNB

This applies to us who have the Oyster dish set-up. I do not know about the Camos dome version.

Like Michele has said, I initially found it a pain when taking my card from home to put into the 12v sky box in the van. I had to ring Sky & get them to re-pair the card with the box in the van, then when we got back home, had to do the same all over again with the sky box at home.So now just take the house box with us when we go away.

If getting the Sky+ upgrade, then there is a new box & card required, and also a second cable from your home dish into the back of the new Sky+ box. That's my undersatnding of it anyway.

I'm sure some-one with more of a working idea of this than I, will be along soon to maybe better explain things.

We bought a Sky+ box from Ebay 2 weeks ago and it came with a skycard assigned to that box, although it is Central Region. My other half connected a second cable from our sky minidish with quad LNB and everything works fine. I tried to put my own card in, North West Region, but the Sky+ box will not recognise this as suitable for Sky+ and requests that you contact sky to upgrade the card.

This sky+ box is a second box as my other half has his Sky Sports on his box in the lounge and the sky+ box is now for me in the kitchen.

The only drawback that I have is that I can't get North West News on ITV, I have tried to use the "Add Channels" in the "Services" bit, but it doesn't seem to work, but very pleased with the system at the moment.

The only thing to remember is that if you want to take your Sky+ box in the motorhome you will have to somehow have 2 satellite cables coming from whatever dish is installed, as with the sky+ system you can watch one channel and record another and also record 2 channels whilst watching a program that you have already recorded, all clever stuff.

Try, these parameters in 'Add Channels' for ITV1 Granada, 10758, V, 22000, 5/6

If Brian was to change over to sky+ Would sky insist on him having his telephone connected for another 12 months, Or would this not be the case because he is already a customer.

In turn how would this affect being able to take the digibox away in the van?

Sky don't mind at all. You can move your card to any Sky box and you will get all the channels except 'Premium' i.e. movies/sport. You can even phone them to switch your card temporarily if you want to watch 'Premium' channels on you MH box.

Sky will upgrade your current card and it will still work in your MH box (not Premium channels). You can of course move your Sky+ box into your MH and it will work on a single input, but not of course to record two programmes at once etc.

I never had a phone connected to my Sky+ box when I upgraded in 2001, or to my current HD box.

Sky only clamp down on 'Multiroom' subscriptions.

We bought a basic Sky box from Ebay and asked Sky to match card to our new box. Which they did without any query. Our "old" box is a Sky multiroom box. The multiroom box is in use when we are at home. When we go away, the card from that box goes into our "new" Ebay box. We get all the channels except movies and sports.

We did not go for a Sky + box as the box contains a hard drive and does not appreciate being transported around (so a Sky engineer tells me).

When we come back home we put the card back in the multiroom box and carry out a system test wheich confirms to Sky that it is still connected to a phone line. We didn't use to bother putting it in multiroom box but we kept getting letters from Sky threatening to "cut us off". We also have the £25 one off payment card but rarely use it due to limited channels.

We only paid a tenner for the extra card .

We have sky plus and I have to say the free to view is so boring BUT then we have the children and often are quite tied so different strokes for different folks ...I like the sky plus better as obviously we get more .

This includes BALAMORY :D

Since you cant be in both places at the same timeWhy not leave the card in the sky box & take the home box with you ,thats what I do.

We bought the second box to save carrying the home box in and out and having to connect the wires each time. Sky box is fixed in the van. For the £20 we paid for the 2nd box it was worth it.

There is no difference between Sky Plus and ordinary Sky (if on the same package deal) when comparing channels available to view. Sky Plus just gives you the ability to record you programmes. The "Freeview" card is very poor in available channels.

taking the house box with you is the easiest solution but i think my son who is 17 and thinks it uncool to be seen on holiday with his parents whould commit hari kari if i took his music channels away from him for a fortnight.

Brian

*-) we have very large dish and normally took card from home, aLTHOUGH THIS LAST YEAR BOUGHT ADDITIONAL £20 CARD FROM sKY but in spain this does not work, as the spanish have put up another new systems, to block arabs, we were told in La MARINA alICANTE , THAT WE WOULD NEED TO SUBSCRIBE TO mICRO SYSTEM. It works in part of france very well. but we find more sites are including sky, therefore not worth paying thousands for system.

Better still why bother with Sky. BBCand ITV are supposed to launch their version of Freesat in March but so close to launch date there has been an ominous silence and there are rumours it is now deferred to May. Still what is the hurry to watch what I consider mostly rubbish!

  • 3 weeks later...

I cannot believe you people go to all this potch of disconnecting Sky+ from your home and installing it in the camper and doing the reverse when returned home when a phone call to Sky twice (and it is local tarrif) does it all to swop your card from home to camper. Also you have to be on mains (unless you have a massive inverter) to use Sky home box as we free camp a lot we do not have this problem, I go for the the KISS system "keep it simple stupid".

But my saying has always been and I will stick to it every body to thier own.

I would be really grateful to know the local rate numbers to Sky. All I have are 0870 numbers which cost a fortune and I know that because I have had an ongoing saga with Sky (now resolved very satisfactorily) since last September with £70 bills for each of two months (now refunded).

Can I also point out that Freeview at the moment still has a very limited coverage so if you want good reception Sky would seem to be the best for the time being. My dish is too complicated to set up and I am looking forward to having the Camos system. Any problems so far with that?

Hi all,

Word a caution – When connecting and disconnecting dish from box or removing the sat finder after setting up (for us that do this) ensure the power is OFF. The voltage supply to the LNB is low but if the power is left ON you run the risk of damaging (blowing I believe the term is) the circuit immediately behind the aerial input on your box. Which if you are unlucky enough to do will render it (cost wise) unrepairable.

When we upgraded to Sky Plus (after they dropped the tariff) they changed the House LNB to a quad feed. I asked the engineer to leave the existing feed and put two new ones in for the plus box. I now have my own (at no extra cost) Multiroom facility albeit with a £20 card.

(which travels with us unless the basic subscription card is available)

We find the Sky + facility worth every penny. And when and if Sky drop its tariff for HD ! we’ll upgrade to an HD Box. I suspect the BBC/ITV Freesat venture (should it include HD) may nudge Sky to rethink its HD tariff. (Our HF specialist in town informs us that HD from a sat is at best 1080i or even the basic 720i. Bandwidth will prevent 1080p/720p for the foreseeable future. I’m not a tekkie but hope above is helpful.
