Guest MIchele
Hi , Can anyone help me with Medical Gas Oxygen. I have 2 Disabled girls and would like to go to Chamonix in France in October I know the snow will not be on the ground but,I also read that it will still be very cold I am worried about the Oxygen up the mountains. Should I keep it in the cab with all the warmth or under the bed which is exsposed to a colder place. Do they Freeze can they blow up I would be grateful for any help We have a Bessacarr E 765and are hoping that this will fit up the mountains so we are doing a trial run ready for Xmas . Guest Clive
If you carry oxyggen bottles you must display clear labels on the vehicle saying its on board. The ferry (or tunnel) operator will also want to know. Where on or in the vehicle you safely secure it its down to you but in the event of an accident it will (if fractured) combine with any combustable material and go up in flames (like a jet engine) very very quickly. Compressed gas bottles must be properly secured so that they stay put in an accident. Your vehicle insurance company should be formerly notified as well. They will have a view on this. Your doctor should be able to advise you of what and how much you should take. However, Oxygen will not fall in pressure significantly due to cold temperatures. Nor will it explode. It will still come out a great pressure, just a bit colder! From the users viewpoint the pressure is unchanged because of the in-line regulator. If however you expose compressed gas bottles to direct sunlight so they get hot then the internal pressure will rise and under some circumstances the pressure relief valve will operate and release some gas. (I have seen this happen with CO2 bottles) Ask all the questions and consult all the specialists for advice before taking off on your tour. Good luck
Guest Clive
Forgot the obvious one. Talk to BOC first and tell them what you intend to do.

Guest Clive
Hello Michele, Could I suggest that you email the ferry company sooner just in case thay have any special requirements re gas bottles. Get them to email you back a formal answer and have this printed out with you just in case! At check in is a bit late to get un-welcome suprises! Good luck

Don Madge
Michele Here's the link for the tunnel http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcP3Main/ They do not except dual powered vehicles (or didn't last time I checked) but will except LPG bottles/tanks for domestic purposes. Have a good trip. Don

livewire
Personally, I would take the attitude that if they don't ask, dont tell. Unless specifically prohibited, just strap them down out of sight, say under a seat and keep your mouth shut. If you ask, some jobsworth will probably find reason to object. When initially designed, the fire safety and smoke ventilation measures were designed taking an assumed range of fire loads into account. These were based on various scenario's. (I think a standard petrol car burns at a max rate of 4MegaWatts). However, this design work was done in the early 80's(I think). At this time, LPG was never a mainstream fuel and was never taken into account. Therefore the fire systems are considered inadequate to deal with a large LPG tank (rather than bottled gas) fire. Also, an LPG tank releases excess pressure under raised temperature by venting slowly to atmosphere, which would be into the train carriage of the tunnel. That is why LPG powered vehicles are in effect banned.
michele
well you learn something new everyday . I understood the damage a Gas bottle could do or would do and why we are always loaded last . And my brain tells me LPG must be as bad . Just didn't understand why they were always so asking about the LPG. cheers
