Sat Nav, descent one?

I am about to buy a sat nav, and wondered if anyone know of one that plans routes taking in to account the size of your motor. Or the fact that you cant use single lanes. I got really stuck twice last year in Cornwall. And before any of your hardened campers start telling me the joys of map reading and route planning the traditional way. I have to say that I dont always have a co driver to help with the maps, sorry. :-D :D

We have the Tom Tom 710 and find it great, doesn't have narrow roads but I know there is a download you can find on here for low bridges. The narrow roads in the small towns of France can be very scary when you get half way down and worry you won't get out the other end.

There are many on here that will give great advice on this I'm sure.

Good luck

Mandy

A friend of mine who is an HGV driver has one with software for a lorry whereby he can select not the shortest route (so no footpaths Bridleways etc to surprise and delight us!) but the route best for a large vehicle.

He says it is very good - I will try and contact him to get the software name - but I am sure he said that most Sat navs have this facility built in - you just have to set it up for it.

I never use one myself mind you! I prefer maps but am now considering getting one as they have tumbled in price.

I have just upgraded to a Garmin Nuvi 770 (£270). it has USA & European maps installed, and allows you to download routes from your PC (invaluable for planning trips) FM transmitter/hands free phone/MP3/audio books/ can be used hand held (walking mode)as well......

Wow Judge, I knew you were getting on a bit in years but I didn't know you could get a sat nav that did audio books to make up for your failing eyesight, and also held your hand whilst you went out for a walk to steady you a bit!!! And does the FM transmitter let people know where you are so they can come and rescue you when you get lost??? (lol)

The satnav thing can show you the way but you must still have some responsibility about where you take you van. There are enough road signs warning of low bridges, narrow lanes etc surely you must see at least one before you get yourself stuck.

We have a TomTom 1 and that is simple enough to operate and read. It will also get you round most of Western Europe too. We used it in France and Spain and it was fine.
