DENBOY
HI ALL, I HAVE A HERALD ARAGON AND THE LEISURE BATTERY IS UNDER THE BONNET, I AM BUYING AN INVERTER SOON AND NEED SOME ADVICE. WOULD IT BE OK TO POSITION IT RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATTERY BUT AS FAR FROM THE ENGINE AS POSSIBLE TO KEEP THE 12 VOLT LEADS SHORT. THANKS DENNIS
Brian Kirby
I would think it should not be mounted where anyone working on the vehicle, or on its electrical system, might accidentally come into contact with the 230V supply. Inside the vehicle, away from the dash and its wiring, but otherwise as close as possible to the battery, seems the best compromise. Then, if the leads are longer than ideal, use heavier gauge cables.
Guest Tracker
Cable size needed depends on the wattage?
Mel B
Use thickest cables you can as the drop-out will then be minimal. You really need the inverter on the inside of the vehilcle otherwise you'll have a real job plugging stuff in and taking it out again!
DENBOY
IT'S 700 WATT. DENNIS
Guest Tracker
That's the thick end of 60 amps so I would try to use something like starter or battery cables, maybe even a pair of jump leads with suitably crimped suitable end terminals. Don't forget a hefty fuse at the battery end of the positive cable.
DENBOY
Thanks Tracker, how hefty?
Chief
I hope it also has a switch so it is not producing 240v 24/7! I also hope the unit will NEVER gets wet or damp. It may short out. I would also be wary of plugging anything in it whilst standing on wet ground. Not a good idea in my opinion. Sorry :-(
DENBOY
OK, so the inverter go's inside, I suppose the length and thickness of the supplied cables will be ok. I have seen large inverters supplied with crocodile type clips, surely these can't be right. dennis
Chief
If it's 700w then croc clips are ok for a occassional use. Hard wire is obviously better.
dikyenfo
I bolted mine to the side of the seat behind the drivers seat which doubles as a bed and is a very short distance to the leisure batt. and convienient to operate the on/off sw. also fitted a triple set of cigar sockets there as the ones in the cab are not on with ign. off.
