Charging Satnavs and Mobiles

On a recent trip away I found the mobile needed charging and only had the mains charger and was not on hookup. Could I have used the12v cig. lighter adaptor from my Tomtom as it has the plug-in as the mobile?

The phone mains adaptor output is 5V 2A and the 12V satnav adaptor output is 5V 550mA. If I had tried to charge the phone with the 5V 2A would it have damaged it?

Conversely, would the phone adaptor charge my satnav at home.

It would be easier to take only one lead, ie the 5V 2A if possible. If this would work it would mean charging the mobile when not travelling.

I wouldn't like to take the risk of using adapters with different power ratings.

What I have done is to buy 12 volt adapters for phones etc. either from local market stalls or eBay. They only cost a couple of quid. Just leave them in the glove box. Never had a problem so far.
