Flat vehicle battery

A W

Recommended Posts

In my ignorance I thought that by being hooked up all winter any excess charge would spill over as a trickle charge for the vehicle battery.

Alas this has not happened. The leisure battery is fine but the vehicle battery is flat.

Was I wrong in my original assumtion please?

It certainly looks like it!!

Hi Alan- Welcome to the flat battery club (lol) Just like me I found out the hard way a few years back that some charging units do NOT trickle charge the van battery only the leisure one. You need to get retro fitted a battery mate unit, CAK of Kenilworth sell them, or your local dealer will supply and fit. This will sort this problem out. I have never understood why they cannot be done when the vans are built, the job would only add a few pounds to the price. Good Luck. chas

Hi my camper also does not charge both batteries when hooked up but does have a battery changeover switch on the habitation control panel, It is also possible to check the voltages on both batteries by selecting the one to view, so I usually switch the charge over to the engine battery for a day or so if its needs charging, if not using the vehicle.I check the state of my batteries at least once a week

You do not say what camper you have but if yours is one of the new conversions and has an alarm fitted then you may find there is a steady drain on the engine battery keeping everything on standby. I have checked the drain from both my leasure and engine battery, The results were leasure battery zero, engine battery 1.5A. I agree that the on board charger should charge both batteries, my last camper had a charger that maintained both batteries automatically, so much for progress! If you have not already done so put your battery on a long slow charge it might recover.

Thanks both.

It did take a charge and yesterday we went for a long drive to revive things even more. For various reasons this winter we did not drive it but won't get caught like that again. We do have an alarm but it wasn't activated.

Thanks
