We want to drive to Bordeaux and join the Canal du Midi right down to Agde.

Has anyone ever done this can anyone reccomend any Aires to stop at yes we have the book just wondering if anyone can suggest a few nice ones.

The stuff in MMM this month is helpful .

Need a bit of help and advice trying to stay not far from main Hospital .

maybe its a tall order . Can you all put on your serious hats please and help us to do this trip with the children . How does one go about getting POI as hospitals. Would there be a list of all the hospitals and we could just feed them in . Again folks grateful for any help.

Hi Michele

Sorry I can't help with Aires & Hospital POI's.

If you do go along the Canal du Midi, the Castle at Carcassone is a must, especially for your children.

We were there 2-1/2 years ago and although some areas in the Castle are cobbled, we managed with a wheel chair.

The "new" town does not present any problems.

There is also a Caravan site immediately opposite the Castle main entrance.

This site will give you a snapshot of whats to see

Hi Michele, did not post before because you asked about Aires, but agree with flicka completly Carcassone is a superb place to visit, the new city which has a great market in it and the Castle is like a fairy tale, we spent a week there last year and enjoyed every minute of it. Carol.

Hi Michele

I certainly echo the comments above. Carcassonne is an enchanting place for children and they often have groups of French children re-enacting historical scenes in brightly coloured costumes. Last time I visited the castle there was an aire right opposite so you could contact the Tourist Office to check.

As for hospitals (sorry to hear that you need this knowledge and hope everything goes well and you don't need one - but they are brilliant if you do) and you have a sat-nav try this site www.poihandler.com where you can download information about 93 of French hospitals. Other than that I suggest that you map out your route noting the bigger towns and then check on www.pagesjaunes.fr and search for "hopital". You can search under region, town name (which is best) or post code. It will give you general hospitals and also specialist clinics with the addresses and you can fetch up maps. Email me if you need help with translation.

Good luck and happy holiday

Patricia

Narbonne is a lovely town to visit also and the ecluses des fonteraines at Beziers is a set of locks not to be missed. The town of Beziers isn't great and in the area there is a lot of vehicle and boat theft so just a bit more care needed. We know the area well but have always gone down by car before.

In June we hope to get down to the Languedoc.

Sorry can not help with aires or hospitals, as you may remember we were new to the motor home world last July, although I did need a hospital on our trip down to the south last year, 3 stich's @ 15 euros each but the staff were very good and responsive, no waiting like you get in the Princess Alexandrer and probably most hospitals in the UK.

I will reinforce what the others have said about Cassaconne having been there twice over the last 10 years, it is a great day out and you can get a guided tour through the castle and walls but on my last visit there was not acces ramps for this part of the town

Have a great trip, the Canel de Midi has some great towns but beware in Cap D,agde as if you pass the wrong barrier you could end up with around a thousand+ people running around in the nude, it felt strange standing in a queue at a bank waiting to exchange money with my wallet in my hand and nothing else to cover myself

Michelle, the aire at Trebes is very pretty. 300 mtrs from the town centre on the side of the canal. No leccy but waste disposal and water are free. You can stay 2 nights offically, but I don't think anyone actually counts!

Cadillac is also very nice. I'm not sure whether it is actually canalside but it isn't too far away. It is inside a walled town, 300 mtrs from the centre, with leccy and water etc. The charging machine wasn't working when we stayed and it looked like it had been out of action for ages!

It is a lovely part of France and well worth visiting. Enjoy

Guest Tracker

We met a Brit couple whilst in France last year and they had worked their way down the Canal du Midi from Bordeaux to the Med using only Aires - of which they said there were plenty - many of them free - some canal side and some in towns and villages.

We did not take any written details as it seemed from the conversation that all you need is a decent large scale atlas and a book of Aires to be able to wend your way along the route sometimes alongside but also criss crossing as the roads allow.

It sounded good to us and is now high on our list of things to do when next in Bordeaux and we will just take pot luck on Aires depending on where we happen to be as dusk falls!

High Michele,

We stayed at Capstang last September for a few days, the campsite is about 10 minutes walk from the Canal. Nice walks lots of cycling and not far from the Med.

We are thinking of going back that way in May for a month or so, especially the Camargue.
