Guest Tracker
Just as Mozilla Firefox is arguably a better programme at doing the same job that Internet Explorer does, plus it gives extra cover should one or other become unstable for any reason, does anyone use an alternative that works well for Outlook Express? BGD
We simply don't use OE at all.....haven't for years now. I always found it slow and cumbersome. I seem to recall it also uses a lot of space and it's Virtual Memory requirment is big too. Remote email addy's are for us a total necessity (IMHO Yahoo is totally ace!) 'cos we can access them easily from anywhere in the world, and if/whenever we change ISP provider, we don't lose our email addresses.
GJH
Having worked in IT for many years, I have never used Lookout Distress. As mentioned on the WiFi thread, we've used Eudora (Sponsored Mode) for many years with no problems at all. Graham
Guest Tracker
I understand that Eudora is being either discontinued or merged with Mozilla Thunderbird - so I have opted for Thunderbird and we will see how it goes.

From the Eudora web site - "The Paid mode commercial versions of Eudora are no longer available. The Sponsored mode versions of Eudora continue to be available for download. An open source version of Eudora® is being developed by Mozilla and will be free of charge." I don't know if this is a merge with Thunderbird or an alternative. At the moment, though, the Sponsored Mode version works just as it always did. Graham

Thunderbird works OK for me and it imported all from OE without a hitch. Until I work out how to improve the way it looks and presents itself I still prefer to use OE - but at least I do now have a backup for when OE crashes or freezes again! J9withdogs
Yes, you can import everything from Outlook into Eudora. It worked eventually, but I'm not keen on the layout.

Glad you managed. Funny about the layout - I don't like the Outlook one :-D Each to their own I suppose :-D Graham
net-traveller
One of the earliest non-Microsoft browser/mail applications was Opera, designed by the Norwegian telecoms industry. It was well received and is still available - http://www.opera.com/ ;-)

dakota
Youll find O E packed with ads , pop ups etc , even with the popup stopper set to high , these eventually cause hangups and slow downs , try installing CC Cleaner from filehippo.com do a scan of your registry and files that will clear em and speed your computer up again , i tried it it works great. Vic
I've used Outlook Express since Win95 through to WinXP with no problems at all. There appears to be a bit of confusion in some of the posts on this thread. Outlook Express is a completely different program than Microsoft Outlook. The email address I give to friends and family, I download to my computer via Outlook Express. No Spam, no unwanted mail, no pop-ups. Any other email addresses I use are web based, ie Talk21 which is Yahoo and Hotmail. Lots of Spam there, but easy enough to filter through. My AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm firewall (both free) seem to look after my security. For those who get pop-ups while using OE, I doubt if it's the program which is causing this, it's more likely that your PC is open to the problem through lack of proper protection. CCleaner is a great program to have as are Adaware from Lavasoft, and Spybot. All are free to download. Of course the alternatives are also good, but it's down to the preference of the individual. dakota
OOOPs so sorry everyone , must have been on the wacky backy , i meant , I E internet explorer seems to let in alll sorts of stuff which just seems to slow everything down , i found by doing a scan and clean on the registry and files did the trick , also found CC Cleaner to do the job best .
