Hi Gwyn. We did it about 18 years ago. The best place in the world for motorhome touring. What ever you do don't miss out on it. It will be your holiday of a life time. We hired from Maui, stick Maui on Google and it will give you their website. January is a nice time, like our July. If you search this Forum there are a lot of posts on N.Z. back about 2 or 3 years. Get clued up on Rugby before you go. Where everwe stopped the talk was Rugby, perhaps because we had a Welsh flag flying. Best of luck,David..........

Hi Gwyn,

We did NZ 3 years ago, I checked out a few of the hire companies and in the end we used NZmotorhomes and hired a fiat based camper, this suited our needs, look at www.nzmotorhomes.co.nz. We picked ours up in christchurch and left it in Auckland had a super time covered over 4000k south island is spetacular out numbered by sheep 100-1.

Fuel is a lot cheaper than here but you pay a fuel tax based on the mileage, you may have to pay this when you hand the van back if its not included in the price so you need to check if this is included in the price or not. You also top the gas bottle up at the garage. We also took out the damage waiver cover, as many drivers in NZ do not have insurance, its not mandatory so if some tearaway swipes your vehicle it could be expensive and time consuming to sort out.

We will certainly use this company when we next go out there. we loved it and want to explore more. preferred south island but both are well worth visiting. There are plenty of campsites, in high season and around the sounds on south island its best to book in advance as the popular sites can get busy, most are well equipted with washing machines and the normal site facilities, we found all sites and public areas very clean, get a good tourist map book, some of the roads over the mountains have very shear drops with very little protection! I am sure you will love it Enjoy your trip when you go.

By the way we used korean airlines from heathrow to soul then auckland found them excellent.

Goodluck with this regards geoff

Got back from N.Z. four days ago after brilliant tour.

Although our tour was independent we booked the basics through Camping+Caravanning Club Caredfree service and flew with Air New Zealand and had a van from Maui.

Our booking include the ferry across from south to north island.

Lots of other vans around : Apollo, Pacific Horizon,Kea, Tui to name but a few.

Two others, Britz and Backpacker are part of the Maui group of companies. (I was told that as the vans get older they are 'passed on' from Maui to Britz to Backpacker).

Most sites have kitchens, some quite well equipped and there are a lot of people travelling around in vehicles of people-carrier size who depend on them and just sleep in the van. A lot of these vans had fridges installed.

Companies supplying these vans that come to mind are Jucy and Spaceships.

We went Feb and March as recommended by a Kiwi couple we met in Spain a couple of years ago and it seemed just about right for us. Much like August and September over here. Only booked a site for first couple of nights in Christchurch ( after one night in a hotel to recover from flight).

After that didn't book anything and found no need to. Stayed on a number of Dept. of Conservation (DoC) sites which charge only a few pounds a night for very basic, but normally clean, facilities.

Covered 5300 kms in two months and because of our mix of sites paid an average of £8 a night over the period.

Diesel was about 56 pence a litre on average, but is rising.

We preferred the south island, much quieter than the north, but the whole country is a great place to tour.

If there's any thing else you'd like to know about just ask.
