bikes on rear carriers

Hi Gil- As far as I am aware the bike or bikes should not project out from the rear of the van more than 40-45 cm, and of course not cover over registration plates or lights, or project out from the sides of the van (tandem) . I have seen some vans and cars with up to 3 bikes mounted which must project out from the van at least 100cm + and this would certainly attract the attention of a Portugese police officer. I dont think they carry tape measures around with them (lol) but a 2 bike rack coupled up closley should be O.K . Put a red/white striped square board on them to show the projection. chas

According to the Caravan Club sites book:

Bicycles may be carried on rear of motorhomes or caravans but NOT cars.

Must not exceed back of vehicle by more than 45cms.

Note also that in Spain (on route) it is compulsory to have a reflective diagonally striped 50cm square red/white panel on the back.

Sorry Malc, no longer correct, motorhomes only

I stand corrected Rupert.

I looked at the Club book again and it is a bit ambiguous, it says caravans "are allowed to carry bikes at the rear of the vehicle" in which case they could be referring to the rear of the car (??) ;-) ;-)
