visiting the Loire and the Rhone-Alpes

visiting these areas 26th July for 3 weeks. Using the Rosyth ferry to Zebruge and taking 2 days to get to the Loire, where we want to do some cycling. Thinking of spending time at Blois then onto Sancerre. We then intend to move onto the Rhone-Alpes for some hillwalking, possibly staying around Le Bourg d,Oisons. We then would like to meander back up to the ferry, visiting Epernay en route.I would be grateful if anyone had any experience of any of these areas and could advise on any good campsites, or could even reccomend better places than these to make the most of our stay. We like peaceful sites; not looking for entertainment, but it would be nice to be within walking distance of a small town or village where we could maybe eat out one night after a long day on the hills or out on the bikes. Thanks for any replies. Kate. (lol)

Kate:

I can recommend the small campsite next to the canal at Beaulieu-sur-Loire a little way to the north of Sancerre, but you might well find it full in late-July/August.

As the areas you are planning to visit generally fall into the 'wine-growing' category, you might consider joining the France Passion scheme, as this would provide more overnight-stop flexibility than you'd get sticking solely to campsites.

Iwould be most grateful if you could give me the name of that campsite in Bealieu- sur Loire. The French passion scheme sounds great but the disadvantage for us is that we cannot book ahead and also you are restricted to one nights stopover.

Thanks for your help. (lol)

The campsite at Beaulieu is called "Camping Municipal Touristique du Canal".

For more details go to

http://www.beaulieu-sur-loire.fr/presentation.html

and the information is in the "Activités touristiques" section about half way down the web-page.

The campsite is listed in the Caravan Club's campsite guide/touring handbook "Caravan Europe 1". If you haven't got this publication already (and your question suggests you haven't), then I believe you'd find it extremely useful for identifying quieter sites that offer advance-booking.

Hi kate,

we visited the loire a few years ago but in mid to late August when the crowds were less and stayed at a number of campsites for 4-5 days to allow us to explore the immediate area on our bikes.

We stayed at a municipal at Beaugency, a big open campsite next to the river and the 26 arch bridge. we visited Blois, Chambard and Cheverny from here not all by bike.

Then we moved on to La Gruinard a Castels & Camping site at Sevres, very expensive but 3 pools, pizzeria, take away etc. A good site to explore the little byways along the river bank. We also went up Le Loire to Chateau Dun and Montigny.

We moved on again to Les Saules at Cheverny, a very quiet site lots of bike rides along tracks and thro the forest, we saw/disturbed deer and watched a family of buzzards for about an hour.

there's lots of sites but early July will be busy and it may be advisable to book for campsites

The Ecrins National Park is amongst the quietest and most unspoiled area of the French Alps we have yet found. Last September on our first motorhome trip we stayed at a very simple campsite at La Grave ( a bit further up from Bourg D' Oisan), located by an alpine river beneath a glacial peak called La Meije. Great range of walks. Village has 2 campsites , we stayed at the one at the top end of it .

We also stayed in the Loire at Azay le Rideau, nice site right next to the Chateau

I have looked up that campsite you suggested at La Grave and it looks great ,with spectacular scenery. We have decided that that is the one for us rather than staying at Bourg d, Oissans which was our original plan.Thank you so much for your help
