Hi. Tried to find a previous thread re school hols in France but no luck. Does anyone know where to find a list? Do dates vary between regions? Is August one big holiday period? Is booking essential during August throughout France? Thanks

Thank you both. peejay's website gives this year's/next year's dates which is useful. I'll keep an eye on the other one for updated info. Trust us! Our planned holiday coincides with the French school break may change our destination now.

Just realised we're in France for bastille Day. Not looking forward to the busy roads but the evening should be good, does anyone have any opinions on the 'busyness' on the roads and whether there are public firework displays etc etc on in the evenings. We'll be around Annecy

Roads will be busiest at the weekend nearest the beginning of July, around 14 July, at the end of July and to a lesser extent mid August, and the end of August.  Traditionally, the worst is the end July/beginning August weekend on routes to/from Paris and Brittany, and Paris South.  However, if you keep off the autoroutes and main roads, you should be fine.

Most major towns and cities put on a show of some sort on 14 July, best to check up locally when you arrive.  However, once the show is over, everyone tends to try to leave at once, causing a mega traffic jam, so walk to wherever if you can, or get a view of the fun from across the lake, when you can see it once the right way up, and again the (reflected) wrong way up!

Thanks for the tips, we are travelling on the Saturday before Bastille Day so i guess we'll just have to travel at quiet times (night) or just take our time. Planned on using the cycles around Annecy as I've heard the town can be a bit if a nightmare at the best of times! Sounds like the evening could be fun :-D

There's a lovely (and quite cheap) campsite at Talloires, just a few miles from Annecey.

Drive through Talloires until the mini roundabout. There's a little restaurent there.

Just a few hundred metres on your right is the campsite.

Two little streams run through the site and you can camp right beside the lake and swim if you feel active.

Lots of Camp site around Annecy, but could be quite busy in August. Fantastic cycle route from Annecy right into the mountains using an old railsway line.

Bastille day the evening festivities re Brilliant, join in its great fun. We have enjoyed many Bastille days, we have found that nearly all towns have lovely firework displys. If Bastille day is around a weekend then towns vary thier displays over two or three nights, one year we went to three different ones over a weekend. We are just wondering about extend our holiday beyond Bastille day to join in again.
