Cant help with campsite, but just relax and enjoy France - the driving is far easier and less crowded then here :-D

If you're in the Caravan Club, they have 9 CLs within a 5 mile radius.

If you are definately after a camp site you could try http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/townlisting.asp?town=Dover

If it were me, I'd try and get over the channel first and stop close to Calais.  That way you wake up already over the channel.  Lubly.

As Da Judge says it's a breeze when you get over there.

Hi Booboo

Again, if you are in the Caravan Club, we've stayed at a CL owned by Mr G F Stokes, Little Hougham Court Farm, Hougham Court Lane, Hougham, Dover - it's only 5 minutes way from the port with a pub and beefeater type restaurant about a half mile from the site.

Enjoy yourself in France - it is easy to drive over there so just relax!

Regards

Alan

Booboo.

Also consider forgetting about Dover and sailing over the previous evening and spend the night on the Calais Port car park. Many of us do this and I gaurentee that there will be a lot of others there.

The advantages are that on Sunday morning you will have already gained two and a half hours (the crossing and the hour time difference), the channel crossing will be behind you, and you can get a fresh and early start if you wish. Also being a Saturday night there will be little lorry movement from adjacent lorry parks due to the Sunday lorry ban.

Lastly, once you have experienced the relaxed driving abroad you will think that driving in Britain is like being in a mad house. Enjoy yourself.

Hi Keith

I was like you when going on my first trip to France. But to my surprise it was a doddle and I really enjoyed the holiday. When I got to Calais we parked at one of the carparks at the port and took tea and got ourselves well rested. Got into the drivers seat,( you would have thought I was going to the moon) and headed off towards Dunkirk. Sat Nav was set for Tourist Info in Dunkirk. Evelyn (sat nav) took us to the front door with no problems at all. The roundabouts I believe would be impossible to enter from the wrong direction. To be sure that I was always on the correct side of the road I kept the footpath etc on my side of the van, the only problem I found was when travelling along a single lane road and entering onto a double lane, can catch you out. Only happened to me once and the wife shouted at me before I made the complete manouvre, never did it again. After a few days it is like driving at home but only on the other side of the road. Take your time and all will be well. Enjoy your holiday. :-D

If you have a TomTom you can set it to remind you to drive on the right. It is in Change Preferences then Safety Preferences press done then at the sounds screen press done again and the "Warn me which side of the road to drive" screen comes up and as they say Bob's your Uncle.

When driving in France, the most dangerous time I think is when you've been into a shop, supermarket, etc car park, when you pull out onto the main road it is easy to forget which side you should be on when there isn't any traffic about.

The other danger time is whe you return to the UK, you get so used to driving in France that when you come back you have to teach yourself to drive correctly here again!

Hi

It is not a campsite but you can stay on Marine Parade in Dover 2 min from ferry, you are alowed to stay free over night and the spots are marked we stayed last year along with quite a few others. The outlook is great and quite quiet apart from the hum of the ferries as you over look the harbour. The town is a short 5 min walk, with eateries. In fact we were very pleasantly surprised at how pleasant it is, there are even CCTV cameras.

You will love going abroad it is so totally different.

Have a lovely time

Hi

Marine Parade - we've used it loads of times, easy to get to not too noisy (if at all - just don't go too near the casino/nightclub! There are actually signs on the road that direct where caravans (and motorhomes) should go to park up for the night now so you needn't worry about being moved on.

We loved being able to have a last potter before bed on the shingle beach with the dogs looking at the water and the ferries going in and out - beautiful.
