Coachman
Hi everybody, bought a Maxview digital compass yesterday thinking it would save time setting up dish. Have had for couple of years the LIDLE one which connects to the lnb and compass £2. Now having this new tool i thought it would be a doddle. Its got a stick on dish type thing which seems hopeless plus the compass is too near metal and gets"distortion" come up So if i have to stand to one side holding the sat finder and having to keep bubble in centre plus adjust dish ,well you get the idea, so how have you that have them got on ?. Terrytraveller
Hi Coachman, Compass is useful to give a rough idea of 28deg, but found as you have the proximity of MH and other metal objects really mess up the reading, on top of that if you are near an electric fence, you can forget about compass bearings. Once I have a rough idea of 28 east, I use an analogue sat finder to home in on the satellite with the sound and the needle, backing off the needle and sound as the signal strength increases, allows very accurate pin pointing the dish for max gain, adjustment of skew can be made accurately too I find. GJH
In setting up the Aldi kit - see this Thread I used a compass I bought last year for 3 or 4 quid to give a rough idea. The kit comes with a sat finder which can be fitted in line to give an audible signal but we found that, once you are roughly aligned, the Info button on the receiver remote brings up an on-screen display which also has an audible signal. We used that to do the final alignment. Graham
Brambles
Sat Finder like terry has, or the ones with LEDs and a bleeber which go inline with the LNB lead for setting up are the best method. Works extremely well and really is the fastest and easiest way by far. You can pick then up on Ebay quite cheap. You will wonder how you managed without after using one. Coachman
So there we were at LA SAMARITAIN couple of weeks ago and set up SKY PLUS and alls well , next night no signal for 28 east but strong signal on bleeper , tried for about an hour still no good . Chap nearby also could not get signal.Down further in the Vosges no signal again so watched the French match on German tv, rest of the time we actually spoke to each other!!. colin
Couple of things come to mind. When you say no signal, was this on BBC (or ITV) this will get weaker but Scrambled Sky signals will still be strong, also maybe skew needed adjusting(but proboly not)
JohnP
If you are referring to the Maxview digital compass which costs about £30.00 it has to be calibrated to prevent inaccuracies when using it. The inaccuracies are brought about by being near to metal objects, as are all magnetic compasses. The instuctions tell you to press the calibrate button and slowly turn the compass round two or three times in about one minute. This should be done in the position you are always going to use the compass. For example the corner of the dining table. Once calibrated it is pretty accurate and will give you the satellites position, but you will still have to fine tune the dish using the receivers built in strength meter.
