MD1946
Hi, I believe this subject has been aired before but I cannot find thread. I have a 2004 Hymer B694 which drives very well, however when taking sharp bends or roundabouts I get a “knocking “ noise. My mechanic tells me there is nothing wrong with the steering and I remember that in MMM correspondence has covered this topic. The result being that one of the tech specialists Barry Norris or Nick Fisher I believe suggested the cause was a badly refitted cam belt cover? Can anyone help please? Whilst writing does anyone know of specialist breakers yards that deal with motorhomes, not a good subject but it happens? Thanks
bounty hunter
Is it not more likely to be the CV Joint? Have you had them checked? John
teccer1234
I also have a 694 which had the same noise plus on the way back from Spain it had developed into a slight vibration coming up the steering column at certain speeds, when turning to the left it knocked but when turning to the right no problem which told me it was the rightside/offside that was affected, rather than messing with fitting a new cv joint I had the complete recon drive shaft fitted, since then after another return trip to Spain the van runs so smooth, do it soon I cannot believe a mechanic failed to miss the fault
Derek Uzzell
In this 2017 forum thread Nick Fisher (euroserv) mentioned the possibility of the timing-belt of a 2.8litre Ducato motor causing steering-related noise. https://forums.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/LOUD-KNOCKING-FROM-STEERING-SYSTEM-ON-2005-FIAT-DUCATO-BASED-BURSTNER-i685/47596/
Robbo
I had a 2002 Hymer which developed a knocking noise when taking left-hand bends. It got so bad that I had both front wheel bearings replaced. I guess they also replaced the CV joints at the time - can't remember...long time ago. Fiats of that era had a reputation for early bearing failure. The next generation Fiat X250 seems to have resolved this problem.
