All very well as long as you never want to remove it again!

My preference would be a caravan specific sealant and NOT an adhesive, eg Hodgson SeamSeal CV.

    Keith.

Not sure that I agree with that Keith? Everbuild Stixall is a Sikaflex product which I have used extensively on my Benimar. A very thin bead around windows using a low adhesive masking tape, and also on the roof to replace old Sikaflex 512, .... and to seal my Fiamma awning mounting bracket holes. I find it much easier to work with than SikaFlex and the clear version doesn't go black and unsightly.

It is really quite easy to remove with a sharp blade and/or a plastic scraper.

  2. I have detailed the route in a previous thread this year.... leave the A28 at J12 and head towards Martainville-Epreville. Then you have a choice. Either head for Pont de L'arch, or head towards Les Andelys and cross the Seine there. It's about 15/20 mins longer, and OK for our 3850 Kg, 7.3M, Benimar.

  3. We went in September 2021 for 11 days. Stayed in 3 locations: Firstly near Carisbrook Castle then near Sandown then near the Needles
All good sites. Explored the island from these base camps on our 125cc motorbike.

Found some great walks, great eateries, and great vistas. All off the beaten track. Avoided the big touristy locations as they are touristy which we hate. Eg Needles theme park, Osbourne House etc .... Except the Garlic farm which was interesting. A lovely Island.

Went Portsmouth Fishbourne returned Yarmouth Lymington on Wightlink £162.50 return. For our 7.3 metre 3850kg Benimar.

Loved the trip and the island and will repeat in a few years.

I have done several Cowes week regattas and Round the Island races and the Island Inshore series races over about 15 years but have only really visited Cowes and Yarmouth on foot, although have seen all of the coastline but only from a yacht!

So to answer your unanswerable question .... I personally think you are wrong ... but I am not you!

  4. Attention Spirou!!

Well Spirou we are here in Soca camp in the Soca Gorge in 28C clear blue skies and are loving it! Superb scenery and location which we are exploring.

Your "Tourist guide" is excellent and invaluable so thank you once again.

Sorry if it was my post that may have offended Jeremy - certainly no offence intended - just my own opinion that whatever the rights and wrongs it would seem like a lot of work for a small return.

    David

David no. No offense .... misconstrued does not imply that. I simply think I confused a few who didn't understand what I was getting at. Probably my fault.

That's a wee bit rich, Jeremy.  You asked a question to which I gave, to the best of my knowledge a factual answer.  I made no assumptions as to intent, just explained what I believe are the rules, and where the come from.

Or am I being over-sensitive about "misconstrued by some"?  🙂

Not directed at you Brian ... as usual you give the facts. I probably worded my original query ambiguously which caused some confusion. I think I clarified what I meant later ie SORN In France after leaving UK.

I was simply intrigued to see if I had found a loophole in the system .... I think I have, but you need to break the law to do it which I would not do. I think some thought I would?

  7. We joined again this year after several years as we needed some sites in North Yorkshire and other UK destinations. We normally tour Europe.

We only used CLs as the club sites were extortionate! How they can justify nearly doubling the price for two people I do not understand! We found that most of the CLs, which under club rules are limited to 5 units, also had private pitches at the same price .... so no point joining the CMC. We certainly will not renew next year.

  8. Sorry Mrs J ... you are going to be excluded from a lot of places these days!

I went to Twickenham Rugby International, England V Fiji on Saturday. Tickets are ALL via phone now ... no phone, no entry. There really is no mileage in being a Luddite in this day and age ... only one loser ....you I'm afraid!

    Sorry

    Neither do I

But the DVLA would know if you get picked up on an ANPR camera (speeding, parking, infringing an emissions zone or whatever) and the foreign country requests your address to send the fine?

John.....Wot? Me break the law? Never! Tee Hee!

    Good point though!

  10. My hypothetical hypothesis is to leave UK on 30th August, then while in France, SORN the vehicle.

Then in mid October , while returning through France, re-tax the vehicle .... very easy to do online.

So at all times when driving in the UK the vehicle would be taxed.

Who in Europe would know it wasn't taxed during September?

As I say, hypothetical, but I can't see how anyone would know? (Unless maybe you had an accident?)

    Jeremy

  11. We are away in Europe from the end of August until early October, heading across to Slovenia, Croatia and back through the Dolomites and Black Forest.

We will be placing our ordinary cars on SORN for September.

I then wondered about the necessity for having Tax on the the motorhome while we were away?

Does it need to be taxed when not being driven in the UK? Is there a requirement to have valid UK tax when in Europe?
It will be insured and MOT'd. Would the insurance be invalidated? Is there some sort of reciprocal agreement, or is this simply a UK requirement when on UK roads?

I'm sure someone will know and I anticipate that the answer will be "yes it needs to be taxed", but I can't see how it could possibly be detected as long as we taxed it before our return to the UK?

I'm not intending to try it out, but it is an interesting poser?

    Jeremy,

Yes, I was thinking of a charging fault causing battery failure, and was concerned for the survival of your replacement.

    Alan

Just an update .. I checked the battery on my wife's return; with engine running reading about 14.4Volts, so alternator appears to be doing it's job.

I checked the old battery .... cells all filled correctly with liquid, reading 12.5V now and will not accept a charge from a trickle charger? At the time of the catastrophic event a test bulb took ages to glow up, but now no problem? Very odd? Perhaps it just had an off day!

    Hi Jeremy,

Are you sure there wasn't something nearby jamming the signal.

We had a house opposite us having a delivery from Wickes and my alarm and key fob wouldn't work until he had finished he was using his remote to unload bricks. also a garage near Oldbury in the West Midlands some cars on certain pumps could not be started unless moved away from the pump first as there was a high powered police repeater Ariel inside the garage sign.

    Pete

Pete thanks for that ..... I doubt it? This is a 1995 Saab 900... A veritable Swedish Royal Barge ... The only signal it might recognise might be semaphore?!

    Jeremy

    From Alan B

Have you checked the charging voltage across the battery terminals?

    Alan

.....And to Alan B thanks - Had no chance to check it and didn't have a multimeter. The Alternator light extinguished once started with the new battery so had to go with that. .... my wife was rushing off to Norfolk from here in the Marsh to see her 93 year old mother. She arrived no problems. I'll check it on her return later tonight.

  14. Very relevant to this thread. Went to the fuel station yesterday to fill up our old Saab 900 Mk2. Stopped at the pumps, wife got out to fill. I tried to get out- door locked? Turned ignition on ...Zilch! Nothing at all! Couldn't open the door so I was locked in car. Fortunately I had my window open so could pass key to my wife for her to manually unlock door and let me out. Battery purchased in 2016... so 7 years before a catastrophic failure.

Had the window not been open and had there been a fire I would have been toast!

    7 years for a battery!

(Fortunately there was a motor shop next to the filling station so new battery was purchased)

  15. I have just done two of my windows and agree with Geeco that it is much easier to remove the cassette.

My roof cassette and side window cassettes are both removed by undoing a few screws in the cassette plastic mounting, so not difficult. Then the screen roller can be removed easily.

If the leisure battery would get me out of trouble in extremis, I am of a mind to leave the auto battery in place for the time being. My wife has on old 2CV which hasn't been used for the past five years or so. It must be over 20 years ago that I replaced the battery in that, but it still starts the car even when it takes quite a bit of turning over to get it to go.

The long cranking time on the 2CV is because the fuel in the carb has evaporated over time (..takes about a month) or the diaphragm in the fuel pump is no longer very flexible. Best to run it for a few minutes every couple of weeks or so. I do that with mine.
