malc d Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 michele - 2008-07-26 4:06 PM Why are they doing one today ? On the Tour de france Normally time trials are when riders race against the clock and not against each other. I understand that they have one in the Tour de France some years to add a bit of variety. ( But I don't claim to know much about the Tour!) ;-)
twooks Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 adds variety and increases the depth of the tour test, thus the winner isn't just a sprinter or a mountain specialist or whatever - but is someone who is pretty good at all types of the discipline. It's also a team event - and in some years have had a team time trial - it's about trying to keep it relatively open. They've reduced the time trials this year - but - if you can't win in the mountains - you're not likely to win overall, and something like Alpe d'Huez is the deciding factor or something like that B-)
